A novel approach to account for shape-morphing and kinetic shading systems in building energy performance simulations

Francesco Carlucci et al.

Summary: This study proposes an innovative approach to analyze the energy behavior of complex kinetic shading systems. It develops and validates a tool based on Python and EnergyPlus that can consider the continuous nature of energy simulation and analyze complex kinetic systems. The algorithm provides a comparison sheet to evaluate the performance of the system by providing an EnergyPlus model and a model of the shading configurations.

Sijie Zhu et al.

Summary: In order to address the issues arising from increased urbanization, sustainable urban design solutions are crucial. This study reviews the research conducted on urban green infrastructure (UGI) modeling in numerical simulations of building energy consumption over the past 35 years. The review provides detailed descriptions of the methods and tools used in numerical simulations, as well as the coupling and validation methods for these tools. It equips researchers with the necessary knowledge to analyze the impact of UGI on building energy consumption using numerical simulations.

Potential residential tree arrangement to optimise dwelling energy efficiency

Mina Rouhollahi et al.

Summary: Energy-efficient dwellings play a crucial role in urban energy conservation, and the allocation of residential trees can effectively mitigate the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. This study evaluates the impact of different parameters of residential tree planting on the building-surround relationship and proposes an optimal arrangement. The results suggest that deciduous trees save energy bi-seasonally, and the addition of evergreen trees can further enhance energy conservation without negative effects on building thermal response.

Mapping the urban forest in detail: From LiDAR point clouds to 3D tree models

Markus Muenzinger et al.

Summary: This paper presents a GIS workflow for classifying urban forests from LiDAR point clouds, detecting and reconstructing individual tree crowns, and representing them within semantic 3D city models. The evaluation of the workflow in Dresden, Germany achieved a classification accuracy of 95%. The paper also introduces an approach for parameterized reconstruction of tree crowns and demonstrates the suitability of LiDAR for measuring individual tree metrics.

Performance variability and implications for yield prediction of rooftop PV systems - Analysis of 246 identical systems

B. Meng et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes long-term monitoring data of 246 identical rooftop PV systems and investigates the mechanism of PV performance variations. The study finds that PV performance variability is significant in the real built environment, not only between different locations but also between peer systems in the same neighborhood. To mitigate financial risks and reduce PV yield prediction error, it is recommended to commission and monitor PV systems in the field for at least one month with the largest range of solar elevation.

Impacts of surface model generation approaches on raytracing-based solar potential estimation in urban areas

B. Tian et al.

Summary: This paper compares the impacts of four different reconstruction algorithms on the performance of raytracing simulations, and finds that the reconstructed models consistently underestimate shading influence. Explicit algorithms perform better with less embedded error, and diffuse irradiance contributes more to the overall error than direct components. The error magnitude is also affected by solar elevation and shading geometry types.

Modelling and Comparing Shading Effects of 3D Tree Structures with Virtual Leaves

Rafael Bohn Reckziegel et al.

Summary: This study focuses on improving the simulation of shading effects of trees in agroforestry systems and estimating insolation reduction with high spatial resolution. Results showed that using realistic leaves leads to higher insolation reduction and larger shaded area. The inclusion of realistic leaves with precise 3D data is crucial for accurately modeling the shading effects of trees.
