Preparation of hydrophobic shaped core-shell phase change pellets and thermoregulation effect in buildings

Yu Xiao et al.

Summary: In this study, a shell material called SSHS FSPCM was proposed to solve the problems of poor water resistance and weak interface interaction in the application of PEG-based FSPCMs in construction engineering. SSHS FSPCM showed a large storage enthalpy and excellent crystallisation properties. Additionally, phase change pellets with superhydrophobic properties were prepared for the first time, and the hydrophobic nano-SiO2 on the surface of the pellets increased the interfacial shear strength by 225%. The thermoregulation test showed that the phase change pellets can regulate the indoor temperature of buildings and control the temperature effectively.

PCM, nano/microencapsulation and slurries: A review of fundamentals, categories, fabrication, numerical models and applications

Kasra Ghasemi et al.

Summary: This study provides a state-of-the-art review on the use of phase change materials (PCM) in thermal energy storage (TES). By encapsulating PCM in shells or porous networks at micro and nano sizes, challenges such as material dispersion, chemical reactions, and low thermal conductivity can be overcome. The review discusses chemical encapsulation methods, core material selection, and various simulation models for latent heat. It also identifies research gaps and provides suggestions for future investigations.

A review of existing policy for reducing embodied energy and greenhouse gas emissions of buildings

Katie Skillington et al.

Summary: The building sector plays a significant role in global energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions. Recent studies have shown that improvements in operational energy efficiency have led to increased indirect or embodied energy demands and associated emissions. Existing policies in Australia, Canada, USA, and the United Kingdom mostly rely on voluntary instruments, with limited regulatory measures at the national level. Signals of change include growing private sector investment and increasing targets for emissions reduction.

Thermodynamic insights into n-alkanes phase change materials for thermal energy storage

Huimin Yan et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the thermal properties of n-alkanes, such as thermal stability, thermal conductivity, phase transition temperature, and enthalpy, in a wide temperature range. The thermodynamic functions, such as entropy and enthalpy, were calculated based on heat capacity curve fitting. The heat capacities and related thermodynamic functions of n-heneicosane and n-docosane were reported for the first time in this work.
