In-situ study on structure evolution and gasification reactivity of biomass char with K and Ca catalysts at carbon dioxide atmosphere br

Xingjun Wang et al.

Summary: The structural evolution and gasification reactivity of wheat straw biochar prepared through pyrolysis were studied. The addition of catalysts or presence of ash improved the CO2 gasification reactivity, resulting in a less ordered carbon structure and more active sites. Calcium-based catalysts stabilized aromatic rings, while potassium-based catalysts increased carbon structure defects and cracked large aromatic rings.

Catalytic effects of inherent AAEM on char gasification: A mechanism study using in-situ Raman

Junqin Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the catalytic effects of inherent alkali and alkaline earth metals (AAEM) on the thermal conversion of coal. The presence of water-soluble and ion-exchangeable AAEM was found to significantly affect char gasification, slowing down carbon structure evolution and decreasing active free carbon sites. Kinetic analysis demonstrated that both types of AAEM reduced the activation energy of char gasification, with ion-exchangeable AAEM having a more significant impact.

The significance of intraparticle and interparticle diffusion during CO2 gasification of biomass char in a packed bed

Aekjuthon Phounglamcheik et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influences of intraparticle and interparticle diffusions on the reaction rates of char gasification in a packed bed without forced convective flows. It was found that at the particle scale, gasification rate decreased with the increase of particle size when the reaction was controlled by intraparticle diffusion, while at the bed scale, void fraction and tortuosity of the packed bed were influential parameters on diffusivity of CO2 through the bed channels. The diffusion resistances at particle and bed scales are sensitive to different size fractions in the PSD.

Towards sustainable biomass gasification: Evolution of bagasse char characteristics throughout gasification

Hong Nam Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the evolution of char characteristics during bagasse gasification, highlighting the suitability of bagasse for gasification due to its low ash content, high heating value, and fast char conversion rate. The gasified chars exhibit high porosity and have the potential to be used as an alternative to expensive commercial activated carbons. The findings of this study are significant for addressing challenges in the industrialization of biomass gasification.

Modelling and simulation of downdraft biomass gasifier: Issues and challenges

Zeba Naaz et al.

Summary: Modelling of a downdraft biomass gasifier involves complex phenomena such as different time scales, inconsistencies in kinetic data, uncertainties in specific surface area, etc. Challenges in transient modelling, including the lack of discussion on ignition methods and radiation modelling, have not been fully addressed.

Real-time monitoring of alkali release during CO2 gasification of different types of biochar

Yaxin Ge et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the alkali release during CO2 gasification of biochar using a surface ionization method combined with thermogravimetric analysis. The results show that alkali release rate from wood char decreases as char conversion proceeds, but increases significantly when conversion approaches completion. On the other hand, alkali release from straw char is much higher and decreases continuously during gasification. High temperature and high CO2 concentration enhance alkali release and char reactivity.

Molecular-scale elucidating of lignocellulose biomass char steam gasification for ultimately converting to syngas

Xun Zou et al.

Summary: In this study, the molecular-scale structure of sawdust char was investigated using various techniques, and the steam gasification mechanism was elucidated through molecular dynamics simulation. The results indicate that the main products of gasification are H2 and CO, with CO being released before H2. This study provides important insights into the gasification process of lignocellulosic biomass char.

CO2 char gasification: A systematic review from 2014 to 2020

Rathziel Roncancio et al.

Summary: Global efforts to mitigate climate change are based on forecasts of future warmer temperatures on the earth's surface, mainly due to the positive radiative imbalances caused by accumulated Greenhouse Gases emissions. Recycling CO2 to useful molecules is the most desirable path, but faces difficulties due to the high thermodynamic stability of CO2.

Catalytic and inhibitory roles of K and Ca in the pyrolysis and CO2 or steam gasification of Erianthus, and their effects on co-gasification performance

Kenji Koido et al.

Summary: This study investigated the catalytic roles of Ca and K on the CO2 and steam gasification of Erianthus char, as well as the co-gasification performance of blending Erianthus with timber waste. The results showed that loading K into the demineralised char enhanced gasification processes, while loading Ca slightly inhibited CO2 gasification and significantly inhibited steam gasification. Blending Erianthus with timber waste at <= 30% promoted gas conversion and cold-gas efficiency due to the presence of inorganic components such as K in the blended feedstock.

Role of inorganics on the biomass char gasification reactivity: A review involving reaction mechanisms and kinetics models

T. Dahou et al.

Summary: This review article systematically summarizes the effects of inorganic elements and compounds on gasification and their mechanisms of action, gathering various proposed mechanisms from the literature. Some mechanisms, such as those involving intercalation compounds or mechanical actions, have been shown to be unlikely. Additionally, the review compiles gasification kinetic models that account for these inorganic effects for practical applications.
