Use of Plasticized Biochar Intermediate for Producing Biocarbons with Improved Mechanical Properties

Robert L. Johnson et al.

Summary: The slow pyrolysis of woody materials under elevated pressure leads to the formation of transient plastic phase biochar (TPPB), which exhibits macroscopic morphology changes. Hydrolysis-induced molten phase plays a key role in the formation of TPPB, while elevated pressure keeps water in the condensed phase. Despite minimal impact on material chemistry, significant differences in mechanical properties were observed between TPPB and standard biochar. The utility of TPPB was demonstrated by its superior tensile and compression strengths, as well as density, compared to carbon pellets produced from non-TPPB materials.

Combined acetic acid and enzymatic hydrolysis for xylooligosaccharides and monosaccharides production from poplar

Wenjun Ying et al.

Summary: Efficient production of xylooligosaccharides (XOS) from poplar was achieved by combining acetic acid (AC) hydrolysis and hydrogen peroxide-acetic acid (HPAC) pretreatment, resulting in a significant increase in XOS yield compared to xylanase hydrolysis alone.

Effect of slow pyrolysis conditions on biocarbon yield and properties: Characterization of the volatiles

B. Babinszki et al.

Summary: Slow pyrolysis of spruce and birch was conducted under different heating programs and conditions in a quartz tube reactor heated by an electric furnace. The study found that spruce produced more char yield than birch, and the main gaseous products showed similar evolution profiles. The relative amount of aromatic and polyaromatic compounds in volatile matter decreased significantly with increasing carbonization temperature.

Chemical and structural characterization of hardwood and softwood LignoForce™ lignins

Maria Juliane Suota et al.

Summary: This paper provides a detailed characterization of hardwood and softwood kraft lignins obtained from industrial production facilities, focusing on their macromolecular properties and functional groups. LFHL and LFSL both had high lignin contents and low ash and carbohydrate contents. LFHL, with higher methoxyl content and solubility, is suitable for polyurethane foam production, while LFSL could be used for phenolformaldehyde resin replacement and carbon fiber production.

Considerations on factors affecting biochar densification behavior based on a multiparameter model

Lorenzo Riva et al.

Summary: Research findings suggest that producing biochar at high temperatures and adding water as a binder can reduce the exiting pressure, while the use of pyrolysis oil as a binder also lowers the pressure. Pelletization temperature has minimal impact on the exiting pressure. Biochar has higher exiting pressure values than untreated wood, but lower than torrefied wood. The trend of exiting pressure is a good indicator of the mechanical quality of the pellets.

Biopitch as a Binder for Carbon Anodes: Impact on Carbon Anode Properties

Asem Hussein et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that biopitch as a binder for carbon anodes shows higher air reactivity and specific electrical resistivity compared to traditional coal-tar-pitch binders, but similar performance in other aspects. By producing green anodes with biopitch, negative impacts on the environment and human health can be reduced.

Carbon foam production from lignocellulosic biomass via high pressure pyrolysis

K. W. Stahlfeld et al.

Summary: Carbon foams are versatile materials with high carbon content and monolithic porous structure, suitable for various applications. A single-step high-pressure pyrolysis method was used to produce carbon foams from lignocellulosic biomass, with successful production from corn stover, pine wood, and miscanthus grass demonstrated through parametric testing. Insights into carbon foam production under high pressure pyrolysis conditions were gained through monitoring feedstock temperature and evaluating production from major lignocellulose constituents.
