Autoignition characteristics of bio-based fuels, farnesane and TPGME, in comparison with fuels of similar cetane rating

Shiliang Wu et al.

Summary: Bio-based alternative fuels are gaining attention due to concerns about fossil reserves depletion and environmental deterioration. This study investigates the autoignition characteristics of two alternative fuels, farnesane and TPGME, and compares them with full-boiling range fuels with similar cetane number. The results show that farnesane has stronger ignition reactivity than HRJ8, while TPGME exhibits greater low-temperature oxidation reactivity compared to n-heptane.

Economic assessment of hydrogen and electricity cogeneration through steam reforming-SOFC system in the Brazilian biodiesel industry

T. A. Z. de Souza et al.

Summary: The increase in environmental concern has led to a rise in biodiesel production and subsequently a surplus of glycerol, resulting in plummeting prices. Research evaluating the economic potential of hydrogen production from glycerol in the Brazilian biodiesel industry found the project financially unsuitable due to high costs. Despite the potential to sell hydrogen directly, the use of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells for electricity production was deemed impractical due to high investment costs.

Comparative study on the combustion and emissions of dual-fuel common rail engines fueled with diesel/methanol, diesel/ethanol, and diesel/n-butanol

Zhanming Chen et al.

Summary: A comparative study on the effects of energy substitution ratio (ESR) on the combustion characteristics and performance of a dual fuel engine fueled with diesel/alcohols was conducted. Premixed combustion of diesel was influenced by alcohol enrichment, affecting ignition delay and combustion duration. Methanol was found to be most beneficial in prolonging ignition delay and shortening combustion duration. Energy substitution ratio also affected brake thermal efficiency (BTE) and NOx emissions differently for different alcohol types.

Optimization of a diesel/natural gas dual fuel engine under different diesel substitution ratios

Jie Liu et al.

Summary: This study optimized the parameters of a diesel/natural gas dual fuel engine using a combination of genetic algorithm and 3D CFD engine combustion simulation. The results showed that diesel injection timing is postponed with increasing pilot diesel quantity, and specific energy consumption is achieved within certain fuel ratio and injection timing ranges. The open bowl geometry was preferred for dual fuel combustion, while compression ratios and EGR rates concentrated to optimal values and swirl ratios showed wider distribution. Temporal and spatial analysis indicated that higher diesel fuel ratio promoted methane oxidation, while lower EGR rate and higher diesel injection quantity also played a role in methane oxidation.

Advances in combustion control for natural gas-diesel dual fuel compression ignition engines in automotive applications: A review

Carrie Hall et al.

Summary: Dual fuel engines using gaseous fuels have been around for over a century, but recent advances in fuel injection technologies and electronic control systems have revolutionized combustion control methods for automotive applications. Early efforts with natural gas in compression ignition engines relied on map-based methods, but the introduction of multi-pulse injection and electronic fuel injection capabilities has enabled new combustion strategies and necessitated more complex control methods. Novel approaches like reactivity controlled compression ignition and high pressure natural gas injection have improved efficiency and cleanliness, but also introduced more complex combustion phenomena.
