Experimental and numerical study of cuttings transport in inclined drilling operations

Mohammad Mojammel Huque et al.

Summary: Directional drilling has become popular in recent decades due to reduced drilling costs and improved recovery. Proper hole cleaning is crucial for the success of inclined well drilling operation, and optimization of drilling parameters is important to ensure effective cuttings transport efficiency. This study utilizes a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model to investigate cuttings transport efficiency in the inclined well section and proposes a statistical model to estimate the efficiency considering various factors and interactions.

Modeling of nanoparticle fluid microscopic plugging effect on horizontal and vertical wellbore of shale gas

Xianyu Yang et al.

Summary: This study establishes a fluid-solid coupling nano-blocking model based on pore characteristics and considers the nano-scale effects. It investigates the effectiveness and influencing factors of nanomaterials plugging shale pores. Results show that increasing particle content can significantly reduce the plugging gap between horizontal and vertical wells, with larger particle size having a greater impact on the plugging efficiency of vertical well pores.

Influence of the location of drilling fluid loss on wellbore temperature distribution during drilling

Zheng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of circulation loss at different positions on wellbore temperature distribution by establishing mathematical models. The results show that circulation loss can cause sudden temperature changes and disturbances in the wellbore, and the temperature distribution curve can be used to monitor the location of circulation loss in real time.

Simulation study on cuttings transport of the wavy wellbore trajectory in the long horizontal wellbore

Yufei Chen et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of wavy wellbore trajectories on hole cleaning and pressure management using a transient solids transport model. The results show that wavy wellbores pose higher risks of drilling complications compared to conventional wellbores, with different types of wavy wellbores affecting cuttings bed height and annulus pressure differently. The build-up rate also plays a significant role in hole cleaning and pressure management.

Effect of crooked drill pipe rotation on cuttings transport in horizontal directional drilling using kinetic theory of granular flow - A numerical perspective

Boxue Pang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the cuttings transport in horizontal directional drilling by considering the bending deformation of the rotating drill pipe. The results reveal the influence of the rotation of the crooked drill pipe on the flow of the cuttings, providing a deeper understanding of the mechanism of horizontal directional drilling and offering a theoretical basis for solving drilling problems.

Optimization and analysis of gravel packing parameters in horizontal wells for natural gas hydrate production

Yanlong Li et al.

Summary: Horizontal wells are preferred for marine NGH production, but face challenges such as a narrow safe operational window and high fluid-loss ratio. The safety and effectiveness of completion operations are mainly affected by hydrate saturation in the reservoir.

Study on the combined effect of thixotropy, particle shape, and particle size on cuttings transport in horizontal annuli

Shiraz Gulraiz et al.

Summary: Several authors have studied the effect of particle shape and size on cuttings transport in drilling, with this study specifically focusing on the role of thixotropic fluids. The findings indicate that in horizontal annuli, cuttings transport does not have a linear relationship with particle size and shape, but instead follows a power-law relationship with the product of particle shape and flow rate, and particle size.
