Heterogeneous chemical structures of single pulverized coal particles and their evolution during pyrolysis: Insight from micro-Raman mapping technique

Qichen He et al.

Summary: In this study, Raman mapping technique was used to study the surface chemical imaging of single pulverized coal particles on a micron scale. The heterogeneity and its evolution during pyrolysis were investigated. The results showed significant differences in heterogeneity among the particles, with a nonmonotonic relation between heterogeneity degree and average chemical structures. During pyrolysis, different regions within a particle exhibited varying structural evolution, particularly in the early stages. Regions with more fluorescence-rich structures or small aromatic rings reacted earlier, followed by a translational reaction for the whole particle. The heterogeneity of the particles evolved differently for specific chemical structures, and pyrolysis process could change but not eliminate the heterogeneity.

Investigating the reaction mechanism of light tar for Shenfu bituminous coal pyrolysis

Zhao Lei et al.

Summary: The generation mechanism of light tar during Shenfu bituminous coal pyrolysis was investigated using a combination of TGA, Py-GC/MS, TGA-FTIR, and ReaxFF simulations. The study showed that the pyrolysis process involved activation, pyrolysis, and condensation stages, with the initiation of coal pyrolysis attributed to the cleavage of oxygen-containing groups. The reaction mechanism of light tar was identified as free radical addition reaction, primarily deriving free radicals from the cleavage of C-O chemical bonds.

Nanoscale quantitative characterization of microstructure evolution of partly graphitized high rank coal: Evidence from AFM and HRTEM

Peng Qiao et al.

Summary: The microstructure of coal plays a significant role in resource enrichment and graphitization. This study characterized the microstructure of coal cores from the Upper Paleozoic coal seams in the southern Qinshui Basin using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The results showed that the carbon structure had a local parallel alignment with stacked layers, and the interlayer spacing decreased during coalification and graphitization. The matrix morphology tended to be regular and smooth in high rank coal. These findings provide supplementary information for coalification and graphitization theory and have practical applications in coal resource development and utilization of coal derived materials.

Accurately quantifying carbon structural types and predicting pyrolysis behavior of coal using solid 13C NMR Cp/MAS spectra

Peng Liu et al.

Summary: The conversion of coal to material or chemical substances through pyrolysis is an important method for achieving carbon neutrality. This study focuses on accurately quantifying the carbon structural types of complex coal in order to predict pyrolysis behavior. The study utilizes C-13 NMR Cp/MAS TOSS spectra to quantify the carbon structural types in coal, and verifies the accuracy of this method using the H/C atomic ratio and aromaticity. Pyrolysis behavior is predicted using pyrolysis Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (Py-GC-MS), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and fix-bed slow pyrolysis based on the correction of carbon structure. The results demonstrate that the corrected H/C atomic ratio and aromaticity align with the experimental values, and the correction carbon structure evolution during pyrolysis is consistent with general conclusions and Py-GC-MS analysis. This study provides fundamental insights for the conversion of carbon material to chemicals and can guide accurate calculation and simulations in quantum chemistry.

Characterizing mechanical heterogeneity of coal at nano-to-micro scale using combined nanoindentation and FESEM-EDS

Ang Liu et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of coals at a nano-to-micro scale are crucial in determining their deformative and failure behaviors. This study investigated the relationship between the mechanical properties of coals and their mineralogical/carbon compositions and microstructures. The results showed that the nanoscale mechanical properties of coals are dependent on their composition and microstructure, and that sub-bituminous coals exhibit greater heterogeneity compared to bituminous coal.

Pyrolysis kinetics and reaction mechanisms of coal slime for cleaner energy

Peng Ling et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pyrolysis kinetics and pyrolytic products distribution of coal slime and compared it with raw coal. The results showed that the pyrolysis of coal slime consists of three reaction stages, with the decomposition of volatiles as the main stage. The presence of inorganic minerals significantly influenced the pyrolysis reaction, and the alkene content of pyrolysis products decreased while the contents of CO2 and aromatics increased in coal slime compared to raw coal. These findings provide theoretical and practical guidance for the efficient thermochemical conversion and utilization of coal slime.

The roles of low molecular compounds on the light aromatics formation during different rank coal pyrolysis

Lunjing Yan et al.

Summary: The study found that low molecular compounds play an important role in the formation of light aromatics during coal pyrolysis, particularly through the cracking of short-chain benzenes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Although they have little effect on thermal weight loss behavior, LMCs can influence the carbon structure distribution of coal. Additionally, long chain and cyclic aliphatic compounds can provide hydrogen for aromatics and generate light aromatics during pyrolysis.

Developing micro-Raman spectroscopy for char structure characterization in the scale of micro- and bulk: A case study of Zhundong coal pyrolysis

Jun Xu et al.

Summary: This study utilized microRaman spectroscopy to investigate the chemical structures of coal at a micro-scale, revealing significant heterogeneity in the micro-scale. The evolution of char particles in micro-scale differs from each other, especially in the early stage of pyrolysis, but tends to converge as the process progresses. The results suggest that a more severe pyrolysis condition can lead to a char with higher heterogeneity, and the pyrolysis of Zhundong coal can be mainly divided into two stages in terms of bulk structural evolution.
