Evaluating the effect of n-butanol additive on particulate matter emission in diesel engine

Qiren Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of diesel/n-butanol blends on particulate matter (PM) emissions in a common-rail diesel engine. The results show that the addition of n-butanol can improve fuel and oxidizer mixing, resulting in lower chamber temperature and reduced emissions of HC, NOx, and PM. The study also finds that n-butanol increases the oxidative reactivity of soot particles and shorter combustion duration leads to higher disorder level of particles.

The influence of alcohol, carbonate and polyethers as oxygenated fuels on the soot characteristics from a CI engine

Yong Ren Tan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of oxygenated fuels on soot produced by a compression ignition engine. The addition of ethanol and polyoxymethylene dimethyl ether 1 (PODE1) improves brake thermal efficiency (BTE), reduces soot accumulation, and promotes organic carbon formation. However, the addition of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) decreases BTE.

Understanding the particulate formation process in the engine fuelled with diesel/Jet A-1 blends

Qiren Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the particulate formation process in diesel/Jet A-1 blends and highlights the potential of Jet A-1 as an alternative fuel for reducing emissions without sacrificing engine power output. The findings suggest that the pilot-injection strategy may weaken the oxidation process during combustion. Additionally, the research quantifies the impact of Jet A-1 on combustion and gas emission characteristics.

Effects of alcohol addition to traditional fuels on soot formation: A review

Yang Hua et al.

Summary: Alcohol fuels such as methanol, ethanol, butanol, and pentanol have been extensively studied as potential clean fuels to reduce soot emissions from incomplete combustion of hydrocarbon fuels. Research has shown a decreasing or synergistic effect of alcohol additions on soot formation and revealed the mechanism behind it. However, further studies are needed to understand the formation mechanism of soot in complex environments and the detailed effects of alcohols on soot production.

Understanding the blending effect of polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers as additive in a common-rail diesel engine

Qiren Zhu et al.

Summary: PODE is a promising additive for reducing particulate matter emissions in traditional diesel engines due to its high oxygen content and absence of C-C bond. High blending ratios of PODE3 can significantly reduce particulate emissions, while low blending ratios may lead to increased emissions. In addition, a summary chart was proposed in this study to predict the particle reduction ability of PODE3 under different blending ratios and engine loads.

Yong Ren Tan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of PODE3 on soot formation in ethylene/PODE3 flames, finding that at low blending levels, PODE3 may actually increase soot formation. Results suggest that sufficient amounts of PODE3 can reduce soot formation, specifically in C2 chemistry systems.

Qinjie Lin et al.

Summary: The study found that the addition of PODE3 can reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, but may increase at high injection pressure; the particle number concentration shows a bimodal distribution at low injection pressure and decreases at medium and high injection pressure; the increase in oxygen content of PODE3 can decrease the geometric mean diameter of particles.

Chenyang Fan et al.

Summary: The chemistry of soot particles plays a crucial role in the emissions of engines, specifically in relation to soot growth and oxidation behaviors. Adding methanol to diesel fuel is believed to alter these behaviors, but the exact mechanisms are not well understood. This study characterized the chemical features of soot emissions from a methanol-diesel blend fueled diesel engine, revealing the impact of methanol blending content on the surface and bulk species of the soot particles under different engine load conditions.
