Incorporating hydrothermal liquefaction into wastewater treatment - Part I: Process optimization for energy recovery and evaluation of product distribution

Huan Liu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of hydrothermal liquefaction as a sustainable method to convert municipal sewage sludge into renewable energy source, biocrude. The effects of reaction temperature and residence time on biocrude yield and quality were investigated using response surface methodology. The study found that optimizing the reaction conditions resulted in maximized biocrude yield and energy recovery. The composition and quality of the biocrude were influenced by the reaction temperature. Upgrading and recovering trace metals from the biocrude were also found to be necessary. These findings contribute to the advancement of biorefinery technology and can guide the design of full-scale sludge treatment systems.

Transformation and Mobility of Cu, Zn, and Cr in Sewage Sludge during Anaerobic Digestion with Pre- or Interstage Hydrothermal Treatment

Qian Wang et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion combined with hydrothermal treatment is an attractive technology for sewage sludge treatment and resource recovery. The study systematically characterizes the transformation of important heavy metals in sewage sludge during AD with pre- or interstage HT. Results show that both Cu and Zn predominantly occur as sulfides in HT hydrochars, with subsequent AD favoring the formation of specific metal species. These findings have important implications for understanding the fate and mobility of heavy metals in sludge-derived hydrochars and AD solids.

Techno-economic uncertainty analysis of wet waste-to-biocrude via hydrothermal liquefaction

Shuyun Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the economic feasibility and risks of wet waste hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) using stochastic techno-economic analysis. By utilizing a component additivity model and a process reduced-order model, the average minimum biofuel selling price (MBSP) for wet waste HTL is around $3.55/gge ($1.01/L). The economic uncertainty of wet waste HTL process is mainly influenced by feed moisture, HTL reactor model, and capital investment.

Phosphorus recovery from municipal sludge-derived ash and hydrochar through wet-chemical technology: A review towards sustainable waste management

Huan Liu et al.

Summary: Phosphorus is a critical non-renewable resource, and its recovery and recycling are essential for meeting future P demands and environmental conservation. Wet-chemical extraction and precipitation techniques have shown effectiveness in recovering phosphorus from sludge-derived ash and hydrochar. Different extraction methods have their own advantages and disadvantages, with sequential extraction showing promising efficiency and low metal interferences.

Hydrothermal liquefaction accelerates the toxicity and solubility of arsenic in biowaste

Hugang Li et al.

Summary: Arsenic is a highly toxic metalloid that can migrate from microalgae to the liquid phase during hydrothermal liquefaction, with a majority existing as As(V) and As(III). Model experiments show that a significant portion of As(V) in feedstocks can unexpectedly convert into more toxic As(III), potentially due to the presence of oxygen-containing groups. The aqueous phase plays a role in facilitating the reduction reaction of As(V) to As(III) by providing a reducing environment and hydrogen donation.

Effect of Prestage Hydrothermal Treatment on the Formation of Struvite vs Vivianite during Semicontinuous Anaerobic Digestion of Sewage Sludge

Qian Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the evolution and mineralization of P and N in sewage sludge during AD with prestage HT, revealing that the formation of struvite or vivianite in the final AD solids is highly dependent on the Mg/Fe molar ratio and/or the pH of AD suspensions. Additionally, both HT and AD strongly affected N speciation evolution in sewage sludge.

Transformation Kinetics of Phosphorus and Nitrogen in Iron-Rich Sewage Sludges during Hydrothermal Treatment and Recovery of Nutrients from Process Water

Qian Wang et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal treatment (HT) is an emerging technique for sustainable sewage sludge management and resource recovery, with a focus on the dynamic speciation evolution of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) during the process. The study provides new insights into the transformation of P and N during HT of Fe-rich sludges as well as a modular design for maximum P and N recovery from the treatment products.

Ibrahim Alper Basar et al.

Summary: The increase in environmental awareness has led to a shift towards renewable energy sources and waste valorization technologies. Among these, biomass conversion and biofuels, especially through hydrothermal liquefaction, have gained significant attention for their potential in existing infrastructure. However, there are still gaps in optimization, reactor design, and catalyst effects that require further exploration. This review summarizes the current state and importance of hydrothermal liquefaction, providing a reference point for future research in the field.
