A novel methanol-electricity cogeneration system based on the integration of water electrolysis and plasma waste gasification

Yuting Wang et al.

Summary: A new methanol-electricity cogeneration system was designed to utilize medical waste with near zero emissions. The system uses plasma gasification to convert waste into synthesis gas, alkaline water electrolysis to produce hydrogen for methanol synthesis, and a supercritical CO2 cycle to enhance performance. It also utilizes the waste heat from the process to provide domestic hot water. The system showed a methanol yield of 6.32 kg/s, energy efficiency of 67.42%, and exergy efficiency of 68.60%. It has a payback period of 3.53 years and a net present value of 355,318.47 k$ over a 20-year lifetime.

Thermal plasma co-gasification of polyvinylchloride and biomass mixtures under steam atmospheres: Gasification characteristics and chlorine release behavior

Chu Chu et al.

Summary: This study systematically explores the syngas characteristics and chlorine release behavior during plasma cogasification of PVC and biomass. The results indicate that carbon conversion rate and chlorine release ratio are positively associated with power and steam/carbon ratio. Plasma cogasification of PVC and biomass yields higher H2 proportion and lower chlorine release ratio than mono-gasification. The thermodynamic calculation also verifies the lower percentage of gaseous chlorides from plasma cogasification than mono-gasification.

Design and evaluation of a conceptual waste-to-energy approach integrating plasma waste gasification with coal-fired power generation

Peiyuan Pan et al.

Summary: A hybrid design combining waste gasification and coal-fired power generation has been proposed to improve the waste-to-energy process. In this integrated scheme, municipal solid waste is converted into syngas in a plasma gasifier, then utilized for electricity production through the steam cycle of a coal power plant with an efficiency of 35.16%. The proposed waste-to-energy system can recover the initial investment in just 4.58 years and achieve a net present value of 40,341.00 k$ over its 25-year lifetime.

Energy, exergy, and environmental analyses of renewable hydrogen production through plasma gasification of microalgal biomass

Po-Chih Kuo et al.

Summary: The study investigates the plasma-assisted hydrogen production process from microalgae through energy, exergy, and environmental analyses. Different microalgal biomass fuels are used for steam plasma gasification, with torrefied microalgae showing better performance at the carbon boundary points. The torrefied feedstock exhibits improved calorific value but increased plasma energy demand compared to raw microalgae, affecting the efficiencies of gasification and hydrogen production.
