Building integrated innovative non-imaging concentrating solar collector for clean cooking under low sun elevation

Atul A. Sagade et al.

Summary: This paper reports a building-integrated innovative non-imaging solar thermal collector (BISTC) for cooking, which is tested under field conditions in two configurations. A ray tracing analysis is conducted to understand the optics of the BISTC. The results show that BISTC achieves a temperature range of 110-124 degrees C and has the potential for better cooking performance under high sun elevation.

Low-cost solar concentrating collector-receiver system as an effective enabler for clean cooking and heating in urban areas

Atul A. Sagade et al.

Summary: This work presents the design and thermal performance of a dual-purpose solar concentrating cooker that can simultaneously cook and heat water. The system's uniqueness lies in its dual-mode operation. The thermal performance of the cooker is evaluated using the Cooker Opto-Thermal Ratio (COR) with glycerin as the cooking load. Energy and second law analyses are conducted to analyze the water heater's thermal performance. The economic analysis is provided through the Levelized cost of cooking a meal (LCCM). The results show that the proposed system has a consistent COR value and high exergy efficiencies for water heating at different flow rates.

A simplified opto-thermal assessment and economic study of parabolic dish solar concentrator pondering on the receiver position induced uncertainties

Yasser Aldali et al.

Summary: This research investigates the opto-thermal and economic assessment of low-cost solar parabolic dish concentrators (PDC) and focuses on the uncertainties caused by the receiver position. An optical model is developed for the PDC system using the Tonatiuh optical simulation tool. The optical analysis is conducted using the Monte Carlo Ray Tracing method, and an experimental test rig is developed to test the performance of the proposed PDC.

Thermal performance of a mini-channel heat exchanger (MCHE) working with CNT/GNP-based non-Newtonian nanofluids

Alireza Anvari et al.

Summary: The heat transfer of non-Newtonian nanofluids in a wavy microchannels heat exchanger was studied experimentally and numerically. The results showed that increasing flowrate and relative waviness enhanced convective heat transfer, but also increased pressure drop. Comparisons with experimental data indicated that GNP/BF nanofluid performed the best, and both wavy configurations improved heat transfer efficiency, with the double-layer configuration being the better option.

Development of new algebraic derivations to analyze minichannel solar flat plate collectors with small and large size minichannels and performance evaluation study

F. Vahidinia et al.

Summary: This study extends two new simple methods for evaluating the thermal performance of minichannel collectors, utilizing the classical fin analysis method for small size and small distanced minichannels, and the concept of overall heat loss coefficient for any minichannel size. The results show that the energy efficiencies of minichannel collectors are much better than that of conventional collectors, with the thermal efficiencies of minichannel collectors with large size minichannels recommended for development and commercialization. The development of a new general relation for minichannel collector efficiency factor opens the way for future research on minichannel collectors' performance evaluation.
