Computational investigation of oxy-combustion of pulverized coal and biomass in a swirl burner

Ali Cemal Benim et al.

Summary: Computational investigation of swirling pulverized coal and biomass flames for oxy-combustion reveals that the Reynolds Stress Model (RSM) captures unsteady dynamics better than the k-epsilon model. Predicted velocities show better agreement with measurements using RSM. However, both models underestimate the measurements, with discrepancies quantified in peak values of axial velocity. Biomass flame is predicted to be nearly twice as long as coal flame.

A novel particle subgrid scale modeling of large eddy simulation for swirling particle-laden turbulent flow

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of subgrid scale (SGS) gas flow on particle dynamics in particle-laden swirling turbulent flow. A novel particle SGS kinetic turbulent energy-granular temperature (SGS-kp-Theta p) model is proposed to model this effect on particle motions and dispersions. The results show good agreement with experimental data and simulations, indicating the accuracy of the proposed model.

Hydrodynamic modeling of non-swirling and swirling gas-particle two-phase turbulent flow using large eddy simulation

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: The flow structures of non-swirling and swirling particle-laden turbulence are modeled using large eddy simulation. The interaction mechanism between gas and particles, particles and gas, and particle-particle collisions are revealed through a new proposed subgrid scale particle kinetic energy-granular temperature model. Numerical predictions of particle vortices, coherent structures, and dynamics are in good agreement with experimental measurements. The study highlights the differences in particle transport characteristics and turbulent fluctuations between non-swirling and swirling flows.

Numerical simulation through Fluent of a cold, confined and swirling airflow in a combustion chamber

Tomasz Wronski et al.

Summary: The study focuses on modelling a cold and swirling airflow in a magnesium burner, and the existence of a significant recirculation zone in the burner is confirmed. The correct simulation of the cold flow and the creation of a recirculation zone are crucial in accurately predicting the high flame temperature and the turbulent mixture of solid fuel and products. Experimental measurements validate the simulation results, with the standard k-epsilon model proving to accurately predict velocity profiles in low swirl cases and the RSM model proving to accurately predict the position, size, and shape of the central recirculation zone in high swirl cases.

Investigation on ultralight particle dispersions in dense two-phase flow using a kinetic friction stress model

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: The study numerically investigates the dispersion characteristics of graphite particles in a dense gas-solid turbulent flow in a downer reactor. Results show that predictions align with experimental data, with lower particle sphericities contributing to enhancements in particle velocity, concentration, shear stress, collision frequency, and granular temperature. Negative amplitudes of shear stresses at fully developed regions are significantly higher than those at second acceleration regions.

Hydrodynamics of Irregular-Shaped Graphite Particles in Coaxial Two-Phase Jet Flow

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the hydrodynamics of irregular-shaped graphite particles in swirling flows in a coaxial chamber using an improved model and algorithm. Irregular-shaped particles are found to be more sensitive to gas followability, while spherical particles are easier to be affected by inlet effects. The interlock force between nonspherical particles has a greater effect on particle flow compared to spherical particles.
