Investigation on combustion characteristics and thermal performance of a three rearward-step structure micro combustor fueled by premixed hydrogen/air

Yan Tan et al.

Summary: A three-dimensional mathematical model of premixed hydrogen/air mixtures in micro combustors with rearward-step structure is established in this study to achieve high and uniform wall temperature distribution. The effects of rearward-step structure and inlet velocity on combustion characteristics and thermal performance in the micro combustor are investigated. The results indicate that the rearward-step structure enhances combustion intensity and stabilizes the flame, but also increases the temperature non-uniformity of the outer wall in the micro combustor.

Entropy production and enhanced thermal performance studies on counter-flow double-channel hydrogen/ammonia-fuelled micro-combustors with different shaped internal threads

He Zhao et al.

Summary: This study presents a numerical analysis of the performances of counterflow double-channel micro-combustors in terms of the first and second laws. The results indicate that the double-channel configuration offers improved uniformity of wall temperature compared to the single channel configuration, with the oval shaped thread configuration achieving the highest wall temperature and uniformity. Increasing the inlet velocity leads to a higher average wall temperature and slightly reduced uniformity. Chemical reaction is found to be the main contributor to entropy generation. Regardless of the thread shapes, the second law efficiency remains just below 0.5. Thread shapes have no significant influence on the combustor exergy. The use of a blended ammonia-hydrogen fuel results in a slightly higher average wall temperature and less uniform wall temperature.

Effects of micro-combustor geometry and size on the heat transfer and combustion characteristics of premixed hydrogen/air flames

Alireza Rahbari et al.

Summary: The major challenge in the development of micro-combustors is flame instabilities, which lead to non-uniform wall temperature distribution and lower combustion efficiency. This research investigates the combustion characteristics and geometrical configurations on flame stability and combustion efficiency, with a detailed chemical reaction mechanism developed and parametric study conducted. Increasing thermal conductivity coefficient, equivalence ratio, and using a micro-combustor with bluff body are identified as effective ways to improve combustion performance.
