Combining Power-to-Heat and Power-to-Vehicle strategies to provide system flexibility in smart urban energy districts

Lorenzo Mario Pastore

Summary: The deployment of distributed renewable generation in urban districts requires managing local energy excess by means of distributed systems. Sector coupling strategies can be a solution to increase self-consumption, representing an alternative to electric batteries, however their limitations need to be assessed in order to properly plan urban systems. This study investigates the potential role of heat pumps and smart charging of electric vehicles to provide system flexibility in residential neighborhoods. The combined implementation considerably improves energy, economic and environmental performance and turns out to be much more effective than electric batteries, especially with the current increase in energy prices.

Power-to-gas as an option for improving energy self-consumption in renewable energy communities

Lorenzo Mario Pastore et al.

Summary: Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) have been introduced to collectively produce, consume, store, and sell renewable energy. This study investigates the application of Power-to-Gas (PtG) technology for blending hydrogen in the local gas grid to maximize energy self-consumption. It also compares PtG with traditional electric batteries (PtP) and explores how self-consumption-based tariffs can incentivize hydrogen production.

Can the renewable energy share increase in electricity and gas grids takes out the competitiveness of gas-driven CHP plants for distributed generation?

Lorenzo Mario Pastore et al.

Summary: The increasing share of renewables in energy systems reduces primary fossil energy and CO2 emissions. The cost-effectiveness of gas-driven combined heat and power (CHP) plants may be affected by the rapid reduction in renewable energy costs, potentially offsetting their energy and environmental benefits.

Towards a dramatic reduction in the European Natural Gas consumption: Italy as a case study

Lorenzo Mario Pastore et al.

Summary: This paper investigates measures for rapid reduction in Italian natural gas consumption, including PV systems, wind plants, biomethane, green hydrogen, and heat pumps. The analysis shows that an investment of less than 80 billion euros can significantly reduce natural gas consumption, create economic and employment benefits, and reduce CO2 emissions.
