Impact of methane gas diffusion in coal on elastic modulus and porosity: Modeling and analysis

Haoran Song et al.

Summary: Energy-consuming countries focus on the recovery and utilization of coalbed methane (CBM) due to its abundant reserves and being a clean energy source. The study of methane diffusion dynamics is crucial for understanding gas flow evolution and predicting CBM production. In this work, a constitutive model of methane-saturated coal is developed from a thermodynamic perspective, considering factors such as methane concentration, diffusion pore length, pore resistance, and temperature. Experimental results of methane diffusion in coal samples validate the model's accuracy. The model's parameters also provide insight into methane diffusion rate and the evolution of coal properties during the process.

Laboratory experiments of CO2-enhanced coalbed methane recovery considering CO2 sequestration in a coal seam

Chaolin Zhang et al.

Summary: CO2-ECBM recovery has the triple benefits of recovering clean resources, ensuring coal mine safety, and achieving CO2 geological sequestration. The study reveals that during CO2-ECBM recovery, the reservoir pressure remains high, methane recovery efficiency increases, but CO2 sequestration efficiency decreases with increasing injection pressure. A displacement index is proposed to reflect the synergistic effect of methane recovery and CO2 sequestration, and a dynamic pressure injection mode is suggested to enhance recovery and sequestration efficiency.

Mechanical degradation model of porous coal with water intrusion

Haoran Song et al.

Summary: A nonlinear constitutive model of porous coal in humid environments is proposed to study the mechanical degradation of deep coal seam due to geothermal and groundwater effects. Wet coal damage is attributed to interfacial degradation of coal matrix and dissolution of inorganic salt. The model is validated by comparing the experimental data with the theoretical predictions of changes in elastic modulus and porosity during coal water absorption.

Chemical-mechanical coupling effects on the permeability of shale subjected to supercritical CO2-water exposure

Kang Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of ScCO2-water exposure on shale properties and reveals the changes in mineral composition, pore structure, and mechanical properties due to the chemical-mechanical interaction. The results indicate that the interaction leads to changes in shale porosity and permeability, with chemical reactions increasing the porosity in unstressed conditions and the chemical-mechanical coupling effects decreasing the permeability in stressed conditions. The findings highlight the importance of understanding the chemical-mechanical processes in shale for optimizing gas recovery and CO2 sequestration.

Integrated assessment of CO2-ECBM potential in Jharia Coalfield, India

Mohammad Asif et al.

Summary: The primary and secondary recovery of coalbed methane (CBM) were studied in this paper. The adsorption isotherm of CH4 was used to analyze the primary recovery, while the CO2-ECBM process was simulated for the secondary recovery. The results showed that the CO2-ECBM process could enhance gas recovery. A 3D coalbed model was constructed to demonstrate the potential of this technique. The study found that coalbed reservoirs can economically implement the CO2-ECBM technology.

Effects of supercritical carbon dioxide under different conditions on mechanical properties and energy evolution of coal

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: The experiments examined the effects of soaking coal in supercritical carbon dioxide for different durations and temperatures. The study utilized CT scanning, acoustic emission detection, and uniaxial compression tests to analyze the micro damage and macro mechanical response of the coal. The results showed that the strength of the coal was significantly impacted by supercritical carbon dioxide. The compressive strength decreased with increasing soaking time and increased linearly with increasing soaking temperature. The study also observed variations in fracture and instability forms of the coal under different conditions. Overall, the soaking time had a greater influence on the mechanical properties of the coal compared to temperature. These findings can be helpful for the safe and efficient exploitation of coalbed methane using supercritical carbon dioxide.

Mechanical response and mineral dissolution of anthracite induced by supercritical CO2 saturation: Influence of saturation time

Xianfeng Liu et al.

Summary: Injection of CO2 into coal seams is a critical method for enhanced coalbed methane recovery and carbon sequestration. This study investigates the influence of supercritical CO2 saturation time on the mechanical properties and structural changes of coal. The results show that after interaction with supercritical CO2, the mechanical properties of coal are significantly altered, with reductions in compressive strength, elasticity modulus, and tensile strength. These changes are time-dependent and primarily occur within 9 days of saturation. Additionally, the porosity and pore specific surface area of coal increase with interaction time.

Haoran Song et al.

Summary: This study uses a geomechanical-coupled gas flow model to simulate and analyze the pre-extraction effect of a mining-disturbed coal seam. The simulation results are verified by field test data, and the evolution of the stress field, permeability field, and gas flow field in the extraction process is analyzed. The study also discusses the recovery effect and abnormal emission factors of CBM.

Long-term effects of CO2-water-coal interactions on structural and mechanical changes of bituminous coal

Guanglei Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the long-term effects of CO2 injection on the structural and mechanical properties of water-saturated coal were investigated. It was found that the presence of water during CO2 injection resulted in significant changes in the mechanical properties of coal, primarily due to sorption-induced cracking causing structural damage. The extent of reduction in mechanical properties was less compared to pure CO2 injection, potentially due to the hindrance of CO2 sorption by water.
