Large-Eddy Simulation of airborne wind energy systems wakes

J-B Crismer et al.

Summary: In this paper, the wake of Airborne Wind Energy Systems (AWES) is analyzed using Large Eddy Simulation (LES). It is found that the wake of curved wings tends to be stronger and to recover faster compared to straight wings, especially when flying tilted trajectory. This difference is explained by the azimuthal variation of the circulation distribution on the wing and it relates to some wake characteristics for tilted wind turbines.

Tidal Stream vs. Wind Energy: The Value of Cyclic Power When Combined with Short-Term Storage in Hybrid Systems

Daniel Coles et al.

Summary: This study compares the application of tidal and wind hybrid systems on the island of Alderney, showing that the tidal hybrid system saves more fuel costs, while the wind hybrid system requires additional wind turbines to achieve the same effect.

Modelling Deep Green tidal power plant using large eddy simulations and the actuator line method

Sam T. Fredriksson et al.

Summary: The Deep Green technique for tidal power generation is suitable for moderate flows and operates typically at mid-depth, moving in a figure-eight path. A unique wake is created by Deep Green with increased bottom shear locally, and the flow disturbance can be scaled with its horizontal path width.

Aerodynamic modeling of wind turbine loads exposed to turbulent inflow and validation with experimental data

Summary: The study assesses the ability of CFD and BEM methods for accurate load predictions on a wind turbine rotor, finding good agreement between both methods and experimental data on mean load levels and load fluctuations with differences of less than 10% for most radial stations.

Turbulence measurements: An assessment of Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler accuracy in rough environment

Philippe Mercier et al.

Summary: The study conducted large-eddy simulations of a high Reynolds flow over a rough seabed to evaluate the accuracy of two, coupled, 4-beam ADCP systems forming an 8-beam arrangement. The results demonstrated the relevance and efficiency of the tested 8-beam configuration for characterising turbulence.
