Active Equalization of Lithium-Ion Battery Based on Reconfigurable Topology

Yanbo Li et al.

Summary: In this paper, a double-layer equalization method is proposed, which combines the reconfigurable topology with the converter active equalization method. The proposed method effectively balances the battery pack and maintains a stable output voltage. Simulation results show that it has significantly improved the equalization efficiency compared to the conventional active equalization method.

Research on active state of charge balance of battery pack based on two controllable flyback converters

Zhonghua Yun et al.

Summary: Usually, batteries with small capacities are used in series/parallel to form battery packs in order to improve power supply capacity. However, this can lead to inconsistencies in battery performance, resulting in energy imbalance and potential overshoot or overdischarge of individual batteries. To address this issue, an equalization scheme is proposed using the SOC estimated by the 5th-order VBSRCKF as the equalizing variable and a closed-loop flyback converter as the energy transfer circuit, aiming to achieve similar power among battery packs. Experimental results demonstrate that this scheme effectively resolves the issue of inconsistent battery energy caused by performance differences and allows for controlled equalizing current and speed, providing better battery protection.

General Decoupling and Sampling Technique for Reduced-Sensor Battery Management Systems in Modular Reconfigurable Batteries

Nima Tashakor et al.

Summary: As the capacity and voltage rating of battery packs for electric vehicles or stationary energy storages increase, battery management and monitoring face challenges. This paper proposes a simple decoupling technique that can derive individual modules' voltage and current profiles from the output measurements without direct measurement at the modules. By accurately determining the profiles, the parameters of the modules can be easily estimated. Simulations and experiments confirm the effectiveness of this technique, reducing the number of sensors required at the pack's output terminals.

Degradation-Conscious Multiobjective Optimal Control of Reconfigurable Li-Ion Battery Energy Storage Systems

Dulmini Karunathilake et al.

Summary: Lithium-ion battery energy storage systems consist of battery packs connected in series and parallel, and advanced battery management systems are required for highly dynamic applications. Previous research assumed identical battery cells, but in reality, cells may behave differently. This study proposes a stratified real-time control scheme to minimize capacity fade and energy losses in the battery pack.

Reconfigurable Battery for Charging 48 V EVs in High-Voltage Infrastructure

Stefan Haller et al.

Summary: 48 V is emerging as a safe-to-touch alternative voltage level for electric vehicles (EVs). The concept of a reconfigurable battery is presented to enable fast charging by connecting multiple 48 V lithium iron phosphate battery modules in different configurations. The cost impact of the reconfiguration system is minimal, but it results in a slight performance reduction.

Adaptive estimation-based hierarchical model predictive control methodology for battery active equalization topologies: Part I-Balancing strategy

Ya-Xiong Wang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an adaptive estimation-based hierarchical model predictive control (MPC) balancing methodology to address the critical issue of state-of-charge (SOC) balancing in battery management systems for electric vehicles. The proposed MPC strategy is evaluated through simulations and real-time hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) tests, demonstrating its superior performance in minimizing balancing time and energy loss. The study also discusses the impact of different equalization topologies on balancing performance.
