Optical Super-Localisation of Single Nanoparticle Nucleation and Growth in Nanodroplets

Paolo Ciocci et al.

Summary: The combination of SECCM and IRM allows real-time monitoring of the dynamics of metal nanoparticles within the SECCM meniscus-electrode wetted area. The results reveal the rapid formation, surface diffusion, and aggregation of smaller entities to produce larger electrodeposited nanoparticles. The use of different tip sizes in SECCM also demonstrates the importance of the wetted area in the number of nanoparticles formed.

Fast Li-ion Storage and Dynamics in TiO2 Nanoparticle Clusters Probed by Smart Scanning Electrochemical Cell Microscopy

Emmanuel Batsa Tetteh et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the material for Li-ion batteries and develops a combination method of scanning electrochemical cell microscopy and in situ optical microscopy for high-throughput charge/discharge analysis of single TiO2 nanoparticle clusters. The research reveals that TiO2 with a size of approximately 50 nm can store over 30% of the theoretical capacity at an extremely fast charge/discharge rate. This finding strengthens the potential of TiO2 for fast-charging batteries and the research method can be widely applied for electrochemical screening of nanostructured materials.

Hybrid scanning electrochemical cell microscopy-interference reflection microscopy (SECCM-IRM): tracking phase formation on surfaces in small volumes

Dimitrios Valavanis et al.

Summary: The combination of SECCM and IRM techniques allows for the study of interfacial processes with high spatial and temporal resolution. SECCM confines reactions to specific regions on a surface, while IRM detects processes close to the substrate. This technique enables real-time monitoring of SECCM meniscus and processes at the electrode/electrolyte interface, providing valuable insights into phase formation processes.

Tunable angle-dependent electrochemistry at twisted bilayer graphene with moire flat bands

Yun Yu et al.

Summary: This study reports a strong twist-angle dependence of heterogeneous charge transfer kinetics at twisted bilayer graphene electrodes, with the greatest enhancement observed near the 'magic angle'. The variation in electrochemical activity is controlled by the structural relaxation of the moire superlattice at twist angles of <2 degrees and the presence of 'topological defect' AA stacking regions.

Nanoscale Colocalized Electrochemical and Structural Mapping of Metal Dissolution Reaction

Yufei Wang et al.

Summary: Understanding the structure-activity relationship in electrochemical metal dissolution reactions is crucial for designing higher density batteries and mitigating corrosions. The kinetics of metal dissolution is strongly influenced by surface structures, such as grain boundaries and defects. However, directly probing the electrochemical activity at these sites is challenging due to the limitation of conventional bulk electrochemistry. In this study, the colocalized mapping of an electrochemical metal dissolution reaction using Ag as a model system is reported. The local dissolution kinetics is measured using scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM) and correlated with the local structures obtained via colocalized electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD). The findings reveal the importance of nanoscale local electrochemical mapping and colocalized microscopic measurement in understanding the structure-activity relationship for electrochemical reactions at complex interfaces.

Direct measuring of single-heterogeneous bubble nucleation mediated by surface topology

Xiaoli Deng et al.

Summary: This study presents a direct and quantitative measurement of single-bubble nucleation on a single silica nanoparticle within a microsized droplet using scanning electrochemical cell microscopy. It is found that the presence of a 10 nm silica nanoparticle significantly accelerates nucleation by facilitating special topological nanoconfinements. The experimental result is supported by theoretical calculations of free energy change based on classic nucleation theory.

Correlative operando microscopy of oxygen evolution electrocatalysts

J. Tyler Mefford et al.

Summary: Transition metal (oxy)hydroxides are promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction, with their properties evolving dynamically and heterogeneously with applied voltage. By studying single-crystalline beta-Co(OH)(2) platelet particles, researchers have found that the particles change structure and composition from inactive to active states as the voltage increases, ultimately linking bulk ion-insertion with surface catalytic activity. This study demonstrates the importance of understanding the nanoscale structure of electrocatalysts in predicting and optimizing their oxygen evolution activity.
