Differences in the deterioration behaviors of fast-charged lithium-ion batteries at high and low temperatures

Yating Du et al.

Summary: Demand for stationary storage batteries that store electricity from natural energy sources, such as solar power, is increasing. This study investigates the cycle deterioration behaviors of Li-ion batteries (LIBs) at different operating temperatures and high rates of charge. The results show that capacity decrease is more severe at low temperatures, and considerable deterioration is observed at temperatures outside the safe range. The mechanisms of battery deterioration differ at high and low temperatures, as confirmed by activation energy analysis.

Lithium plating on the anode for lithium-ion batteries during long-term low temperature cycling

Guangxu Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the evolution of lithium plating in commercial lithium-ion batteries during long-term low temperature cycling. The results show that capacity degradation and internal resistance increase decelerate with a turning point around 450 cycles, with the loss of cyclable lithium being the main reason behind battery degradation. Post-mortem analysis reveals the thickness and morphology change of plated lithium, as well as the composition of solid electrolyte interface film.

Impact of low temperature and charge profile on the aging of lithium-ion battery: Non-invasive and post-mortem analysis

Weixiong Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the low temperature performance of lithium-ion batteries under various charge rates, finding that there is a considerable reversible capacity loss and internal resistance increase with the increase in charge rate. The main degradation modes were identified as loss of lithium inventory and loss of active material, with lithium plating regarded as the main aging mechanism.

Capacity fade characteristics of nickel-based lithium-ion secondary battery after calendar deterioration at 80 °C

Yating Du et al.

Summary: The study showed that storing nickel-based lithium-ion secondary batteries at 80 degrees C led to decreased battery capacity over time, primarily due to significant overvoltage changes at approximately 4.2 V. Additionally, post-mortem analysis revealed clear deterioration of the cathode active material in the tested batteries, while no significant changes were observed in the anode active material.
