Iron as a sustainable chemical carrier of renewable energy: Analysis of opportunities and challenges for retrofitting coal-fired power plants

P. Debiagi et al.

Summary: As a result of the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, several countries have committed to phasing down coal electricity and deactivating power plants. Retrofitting these plants for iron combustion can generate CO2-free electricity, with the iron oxides produced in the process being collected and reduced back to metallic iron using H2. The feasibility of retrofitting and adding these material requirements to markets has been evaluated, indicating that it is viable not only for single power plants but also on larger scales, promoting advancements in sustainable electricity, steel industry, and hydrogen production.

Electrochemical Reduction of Iron Oxides in Aqueous NaOH Electrolyte Including Iron Residue from Nickel and Zinc Electrowinning Processes

Geir Martin Haarberg et al.

Summary: Experiments were conducted at around 100 degrees C in NaOH-H2O (50-50 wt%) electrolyte using a suspension of Fe2O3 particles, with a rotating disk electrode made of graphite or silver as the cathode. The current efficiency for iron deposition consistently exceeded 90%. Recent experiments involved the utilization of iron-containing residue from industrial electrolysis processes for nickel and zinc production, with the challenge of purifying the residue prior to electrolysis.
