Desorption behavior of antibiotics by microplastics (tire wear particles) in simulated gastrointestinal fluids

Xiulei Fan et al.

Summary: Microplastics (MPs) are widely distributed and can carry pollutants into organisms, resulting in chemical accumulation. This study investigated the desorption mechanism of antibiotics carried by tire wear particles (TWP) in simulated human gastrointestinal fluid and fish intestinal fluid. The study found that photoaged TWP in an aquatic environment had cracks, pores, depressions, and additional adsorption sites for pollutants. The desorption rate was higher in simulated human gastric fluid than fish intestinal fluid due to competition for adsorption sites and potential dissolution of antibiotics. This study enhances our understanding of TWP toxicity and has implications for risk assessments.

Adsorption of a diverse range of pharmaceuticals to polyethylene microplastics in wastewater and their desorption in environmental matrices

Louise McDougall et al.

Summary: The study revealed that pharmaceuticals in cationic form with greater hydrophobicity are more likely to adsorb to microplastics in municipal wastewater. Despite being bioavailable to aquatic organisms, pharmaceuticals adsorbed to microplastics are often overlooked as an exposure route due to pre-filtration of water samples before chemical analysis.

Investigation of the Adsorption of Sulfamethoxazole by Degradable Microplastics Artificially Aged by Chemical Oxidation

Fanxing Kong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption behavior of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) on different types of microplastics aged by thermal activation. The adsorption capacity of microplastics increased with aging time, and different types of microplastics exhibited varying adsorption capacities for SMX under different conditions.

Uptake and absorption of fluoranthene from spiked microplastics into the digestive gland tissues of blue mussels, Mytilus edulis L.

Nicole Stollberg et al.

Summary: The study found that benthic filter feeder Mytilus edulis exposed to contaminant-loaded microplastics in laboratory conditions accumulated high concentrations of hydrophobic contaminants in their digestive gland tissues, indicating that microplastics may act as vehicles for transporting these contaminants into organismal tissues.
