Specific chemical adsorption of selected divalent heavy metal ions onto hydrous ?-Fe2O3-biochar from dilute aqueous solutions with pH as a master variable

Cuijuan Feng et al.

Summary: A gamma-Fe2O3-biochar was synthesized using ferrate as precursor, which increased surface acidity and magnetism strength, enhancing metal ion adsorption and enabling easy magnetic separation. The adsorption of selected metal ions onto gamma-Fe2O3-biochar was well fitted by the Langmuir adsorption model, with significantly high monolayer metal coverage capacity. Metal ion adsorption reactions involved surface complex formation and the dominating component for adsorption was specific chemical energy.

Biochar co-doped with nitrogen and boron switching the free radical based peroxydisulfate activation into the electron-transfer dominated nonradical process

Jibo Dou et al.

Summary: In this study, N/B co-doped biochars were used as metal-free activators of peroxydisulfate (PDS) for tetracycline degradation, and the roles of dopants as well as the relative contribution of radical vs nonradical oxidations were comprehensively investigated. The findings demonstrated that co-doping N and B into biochars not only enhanced catalytic activity, but also shifted the PDS-activated process from radical to electron transfer-dominated nonradical pathway. The study provided new insights into the critical role of heteroatom-doped carbocatalysts in PDS nonradical activation.

A critical review on sulfur reduction of aqueous selenite: Mechanisms and applications

Jiaming Xiong et al.

Summary: Selenite, highly toxic at high concentrations, can be easily enriched in natural water environments due to human activities, causing significant harm to ecosystems. Sulfur reduction effectively converts soluble selenite to nontoxic solid selenium, playing a vital role in controlling selenium toxicity. This review comprehensively summarizes the continuous development in the sulfidation of selenite and identifies future research needs for environmental applications.

Efficient adsorptive and reductive removal of U(VI) and Se(IV) using porous hexagonal boron nitride supported nanoscale iron sulfide: Performance and mechanism

Jisheng Kou et al.

Summary: The study investigated the removal of U(VI) and Se(IV) from aqueous solutions using FeS@h-BN nanocomposite and characterized the process using spectroscopy techniques. Results showed that the FeS@h-BN nanocomposite had a large surface area and potential, leading to excellent decontamination performance. The adsorption of U(VI) and Se(IV) on FeS@h-BN was mainly driven by chemical interaction. The pH of the solution played a significant role in the adsorption process due to its influence on the surface potential and speciation of U(VI) and Se(IV).

Biochar for the removal of contaminants from soil and water: a review

Muqing Qiu et al.

Summary: Biochar has significant potential as a material for remediating water and soil due to its widespread availability and favorable physio-chemical surface characteristics. Its efficacy in managing contaminants depends on factors such as pyrolysis temperature, feedstock type, and surface properties. Higher temperature biochar is effective for managing organic pollutants, while lower temperature biochar is suitable for removing polar organic and inorganic pollutants. This review also discusses current obstacles and future research directions in using biochar to immobilize contaminants in water and soil.
