Mesoporous carbon framework supported Fe-Cu-Mn oxides as an efficient peroxymonosulfate catalyst for the control of harmful algal blooms: Synergism of Fe-Cu-Mn and role of mesoporous carbon

Zijun Yang et al.

Summary: This study synthesized a mesoporous carbon-supported Fe-Cu-Mn oxide catalyst (MnFe2O4/CuO; FCMT) to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the elimination of Microcystis aeruginosa and algal organic matters (AOMs). The FCMT/PMS system effectively removed over 99% of algae at low FCMT and PMS dosages within 120 minutes. The system showed high efficiency in removing algae over a wide pH range (3.0-9.0) and algal density range (OD680 = 0.05-0.4), and involved both free radicals and non-free radicals pathways.

Efficient peroxymonosulfate activation by biochar-based nanohybrids for the degradation of pharmaceutical and personal care products in aquatic environments

Tong Liu et al.

Summary: Recently, the ecological toxicity, persistence, and prevalence of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic environments have raised concerns. Peroxymonosulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (PMS-AOPs) have shown promise in eliminating PPCPs due to their strong oxidation ability and adaptability. This review summarizes the types, sources, fates, and ecological toxicities of PPCPs, as well as the preparation and modification methods of biochar-based catalysts for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). It also discusses the application of biochar-based multifunctional nanocomposites in activating PMS to remove PPCPs, along with the influencing factors and degradation mechanisms involved. Additionally, the study proposes future research directions for the industrial application of biochar-based nanocomposites. Overall, this study provides valuable insight for the efficient removal of PPCPs using biochar-based catalysts in PMS-AOPs.

Mingda Che et al.

Summary: A novel heterogenous Fenton-like process utilizing arbutin-modified cellulose nanocrystals (AT-CNC) activated persulfate was proposed to remove the harmful algal blooms (HABs) Phaeocystis globosa from seawater. The results showed that the removal efficiency of P. globosa reached high levels under certain additive conditions. Therefore, this method has the potential to be an efficient option for controlling HABs.

Long-Term Temporal and Spatial Monitoring of Cladophora Blooms in Qinghai Lake Based on Multi-Source Remote Sensing Images

Hongyu Duan et al.

Summary: With climate warming and intensification of human activities, the problem of Cladophora blooms in Qinghai Lake, China's largest inland saltwater lake, has become increasingly prominent. This study used remote sensing images to extract the area of floating Cladophora blooms from 1986 to 2021 and analyzed their variation characteristics and spatial patterns. The results showed a general increasing trend of Cladophora blooms in Qinghai Lake, with the largest increase in July. The areas of blooms increased significantly in certain regions, while decreasing in others. The correlation between meteorological factors and the changes in blooms was weak. The control measures implemented in recent years have had a certain inhibitory effect on the blooms.

Development and application of lanthanum peroxide loaded sepiolite nanocomposites for simultaneous removal of phosphate and inhibition of cyanobacteria growth

Sujie Shan et al.

Summary: The simultaneous elimination of cyanobacteria and phosphate from eutrophic waters is of great importance. LPS30, a lanthanum peroxide-loaded sepiolite nanocomposite, demonstrated excellent properties in removing phosphate and inhibiting cyanobacteria growth. It exhibited high phosphate uptake, fast uptake kinetics, and relatively higher selectivity. The efficient and long-lasting inhibition for cyanobacteria regrowth was attributed to the combined effect of oxidative species and the efficient removal of phosphate through coagulation flocs.

Lele Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of different crystal plane exposures of Co3O4 nanomaterials on the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in water. It was found that Co3O4-NR with (110) plane exposure showed superior activity in efficiently removing bisphenol A (BPA), with singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) playing a dominant role in the degradation process. The study also explored the evolution of lattice defects (oxygen vacancies) during PMS activation.

A innovative stepwise strategy using magnetic Fe3O4-co-graft tannin/ polyethyleneimine composites in a coupled process of sulfate radical-advanced oxidation processes to control harmful algal blooms

Zijun Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel TP@Fe3O4 magnetic composite was used in combination with magnetic flocculation and sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (S-AOPs) to efficiently remove Microcystis aeruginosa and algal organic matters. The TP@Fe3O4 showed a high positive charge, resulting in a high algae removal rate at a modest dosage. The system of PMS/TP@Fe3O4 successfully reduced the TP@Fe3O4 dosage and effectively degraded AOMs. Through UV/PMS oxidation, a significant removal of microcystin and DOC was achieved. This method provides a non-destructive approach to mitigate harmful algal blooms.
