Polyamine: A Potent Ameliorator for Plant Growth Response and Adaption to Abiotic Stresses Particularly the Ammonium Stress Antagonized by Urea

Song Sheng et al.

Summary: Polyamines (PAs) are synthesized in almost all organisms and play important roles in regulating plant growth, development, and response to stress. Although many studies have shown that an increase in PA levels can benefit plant growth under abiotic conditions, most research has focused on PA homoeostasis and metabolism rather than the molecular and cellular signaling cascades mediated by PAs. In this study, we summarize the synthesis and catabolism of PAs, and discuss their role as internal regulators in plant stress adaptation. We also propose the possibility of PA-facilitated signal transduction pathways in plant tolerance to NH4+-stress, which could be an interesting topic for future studies.

Sulfur triggers glutathione and phytochelatin accumulation causing excess Cd bound to the cell wall of roots in alleviating Cd-toxicity in alfalfa

Urmi Das et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that supplementation of sulfur can alleviate cadmium toxicity in alfalfa plants by restoring biomass, chlorophyll synthesis, and protein concentration, as well as enhancing photosynthetic kinetics and membrane stability. The mechanisms involve upregulation of sulfate transporters, glutathione and phytochelatin synthesis, and subcellular sequestration of excess cadmium in roots under sulfur surplus conditions. These findings provide valuable insights for developing cadmium-free forage crops through sulfur application and breeding/transgenic experiments.

AtPng1 knockout mutant of Arabidopsis thaliana shows a juvenile phenotype, morpho-functional changes, altered stress response and cell wall modifications

D. Serafini-Fracassini et al.

Summary: The study on the AtPng1 knock out (KO) line reveals the significant role of TGase activity in plant development and stress response, with the KO line showing a more juvenile phenotype and exhibiting different responses after heat and wound stress compared to the wild type. Additionally, the residual TGase activity in the KO line, particularly in the plastidial fraction, suggests a complex relationship between TGase and plant growth and stress adaptation.

Nitric oxide, crosstalk with stress regulators and plant abiotic stress tolerance

Xianrong Zhou et al.

Summary: Nitric oxide is a dynamic gaseous molecule that plays a key role in plant stress responses and signalling, with potential applications in engineering abiotic stress tolerance in crops. It can act as a signaling molecule at low concentrations but can also lead to oxidative stress and cellular damage at higher concentrations. Additionally, nitric oxide has been recognized as a potent stress alleviator and growth regulator in plants.

Genome-wide identification and expression analysis of Polyamine Uptake Transporter gene family in sweet orange (Citrus sinensis)

A. Alhag et al.

Summary: This study identified eight PUT genes in the sweet orange genome, distributed on three chromosomes, which showed differential expression in different tissues and were induced by polyamines. Among them, CsPUT4 was selected for functional analysis and showed an increase in endogenous polyamine content and enhanced cold tolerance.

Unfinished story of polyamines: Role of conjugation, transport and light-related regulation in the polyamine metabolism in plants

Magda Pal et al.

Summary: Polyamines play a fundamental role in cell functioning, with their synthesis and catabolism well studied in various plant species. However, more research is needed on the dynamic changes in polyamine pools and their conjugation with other compounds. In addition, the role of polyamine transporters in plants is a newly recognized area of investigation.
