Zearalenone induces oxidative stress and autophagy in goat Sertoli cells

Xinyu Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that exposure to ZEA can induce oxidative stress and autophagy in dairy goat Sertoli cells, leading to cell apoptosis and decreased cell viability. NAC pretreatment can effectively inhibit ZEA-induced oxidative stress, apoptosis, and autophagy. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms of ZEA-induced reproductive damage in dairy goats.

Caffeic acid mitigates aflatoxin B1-mediated toxicity in the male rat reproductive system by modulating inflammatory and apoptotic responses, testicular function, and the redox-regulatory systems

Solomon E. Owumi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the protective effects of caffeic acid (CA) against Aflatoxin B1 (AFB(1))-induced oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in male rats. The results show that CA can alleviate the toxic effects of AFB(1) on the hypothalamus, epididymis, and testis by reducing oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis.

An update on immunotoxicity and mechanisms of action of six environmental mycotoxins

Yuhang Sun et al.

Summary: Six mycotoxins have both immunosuppressive and immunostimulatory effects, with effects depending on various factors. Low doses induce inflammation, while elevated levels lead to immunosuppression; long-term exposure has an immunosuppressive effect. These mycotoxins have anti-inflammatory roles in the presence of immune stimulants, but pro-inflammatory roles in their absence. Pigs are most sensitive to mycotoxins, while ruminants are the least susceptible.

Nonylphenol inhibited HIF-1alpha regulated aerobic glycolysis and induced ROS mediated apoptosis in rat Sertoli cells

Qianqian Jiang et al.

Summary: Nonylphenol (NP), an endocrine disruptor, can induce apoptosis in Sertoli cells (SCs). This study found that exposure to NP inhibits lactate production and secretion in SCs, and disrupts intracellular homeostasis by reducing the expression of HIF-1α and inhibiting aerobic glycolysis, leading to ROS-mediated apoptosis.

Immune homeostasis and disorder in the testis - Roles of Sertoli cells

Ran Chen et al.

Summary: The mammalian testis requires a highly organized microenvironment for its functions, and an immunoprivileged status is essential for protecting male germ cells. However, innate immune responses may disrupt the immunoprivileged status and result in orchitis, affecting testis function. Testicular immune homeostasis is regulated by the coordination of tissue structure and cellular functions, with Sertoli cells playing a pivotal role.

Glucose starvation induces autophagy via ULK1-mediated activation of PIKfyve in an AMPK-dependent manner

Cansu Karabiyik et al.

Summary: In response to glucose starvation, ULK1 activation by AMPK phosphorylates PIKfyve on S1548, leading to increased synthesis of the phospholipid PI(5)P and formation of PI(5)P-containing autophagosomes. This ULK1-mediated process enhances autophagy flux and reduces autophagy substrate levels.
