Global change effects on biogeochemical mercury cycling

Jeroen E. Sonke et al.

Summary: Past and present anthropogenic mercury release has harmful effects on human health and has significant economic costs. The UNEP Minamata Convention on Mercury and global monitoring efforts aim to reduce mercury release and track its success. Global change factors such as deforestation and ocean stratification interact with the complex biogeochemical mercury cycle, leading to changes in mercury exposure. However, based on past declines in mercury release, it is expected that future policy impacts can be distinguished from global change effects at regional and global scales.

Mercury stable isotopes in the ocean: Analytical methods, cycling, and application as tracers

Zhengwen Zhou et al.

Summary: Mercury stable isotopes are important for tracing sources and evaluating processes in Hg cycling. This review focuses on Hg stable isotopes in marine environments, discussing advances in analysis, isotope ratios in seawater, sediment, and organisms, processes governing isotope ratios in the ocean, and applications in understanding biotic uptake and migration. The use of Hg isotopes has provided valuable insights into coastal sources, transformation pathways, trophic levels of marine fish, and habitat changes. Improved methods and measurements will further enhance our understanding of the marine Hg cycle, including mercury exchange at interfaces and fractionation mechanisms.

Mercury Contamination Challenges the Behavioral Response of a Keystone Species to Arctic Climate Change

Andrea S. Grunst et al.

Summary: The study investigated the combined effects of multiple climate change-associated stressors on Arctic seabirds, specifically their behavior and population resilience. The results showed that changes in sea surface temperature and sea ice coverage caused shifts in activity patterns and diving behaviors, leading to decreased resting, increased flight, and longer dives. Mercury contamination was not directly associated with behavior, but highly contaminated birds showed longer interdive breaks during long dives, suggesting physiological limitations. As dive durations increased with warm sea surface temperature, subtle toxicological effects could limit diving and foraging efficiency, with potential ecosystem-wide consequences.

Elevated methylmercury in Antarctic surface seawater: The role of phytoplankton mass and sea ice

Fange Yue et al.

Summary: Methylmercury distribution and biogeochemical cycle in Antarctic seas are poorly understood. This study reports high levels of methylmercury in unfiltered seawater from the Ross Sea to the Amundsen Sea, particularly in surface water. The high concentration is likely influenced by phytoplankton mass and the presence of sea-ice.

A U-Turn for Mercury Concentrations over 20 Years: How Do Environmental Conditions Affect Exposure in Arctic Seabirds?

Sabrina Tartu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the blood mercury concentrations in black-legged kittiwakes in Svalbard, Norway, from 2000 to 2019. The results showed a U-shaped trend in the mercury concentrations during this period. Nitrogen stable isotopes and chlorophyll a concentrations were found to be better predictors of mercury concentrations, with positive and U-shaped associations, respectively. The findings suggest that changes in prey community and the release of methylmercury associated with shrinking sea ice are major factors influencing the mercury concentrations.

Anthropogenic and Climatic Drivers of Long-Term Changes of Mercury and Feeding Ecology in Arctic Beluga (Delphinapterus leucas) Populations

Jean-Pierre Desforges et al.

Summary: A study on Eastern High Arctic-Baffin Bay beluga showed significant changes in feeding ecology and mercury accumulation over time, with modern beluga having 3-5 times higher mercury concentrations in teeth compared to historical beluga. Shifts in isotopic niche indicate changes in feeding ecology in recent decades, potentially influenced by climate change.

Mercury biomagnification in an Antarctic food web of the Antarctic Peninsula

Ricardo S. Matias et al.

Summary: Under the context of climate change, warming Southern Ocean waters may lead to increased bioavailability of mercury (Hg) in the Antarctic marine food web. This study examined the biomagnification of Hg in the food web of the Antarctic Peninsula and found that Hg concentrations increased with trophic levels. These results suggest that trophic interaction is the major pathway for Hg biomagnification in Southern Ocean ecosystems.

Climate change and mercury in the Arctic: Biotic interactions

Melissa A. McKinney et al.

Summary: Global climate change has had a significant impact on the Arctic environment and ecosystems, affecting mercury (Hg) levels in Arctic biota. The marine environment has higher Hg levels compared to terrestrial environments, leading to changes in Hg concentrations in herbivores and predators in the Arctic region.

Mercury contamination and potential health risks to Arctic seabirds and shorebirds

Olivier Chastel et al.

Summary: This review article investigates the contemporary mercury exposure and potential health risk to Arctic seabirds and shorebirds. It finds that some Arctic seabird populations have mercury concentrations exceeding toxicity benchmarks, while most seabirds and shorebirds have a lower risk to mercury toxicity. Recent studies have reported negative effects of mercury on hormone levels, genetic damage, and reproductive performance in some bird species. The findings highlight the importance of considering mercury exposure in conjunction with other stressors when assessing the impact on Arctic birds.

Adelie penguins foraging consistency and site fidelity are conditioned by breeding status and environmental conditions

Candice Michelot et al.

Summary: Research shows that Adelie penguins in Antarctica exhibit consistent foraging behavior under varying sea-ice conditions, specializing their foraging activity during the chick-rearing season to enhance reproductive success. Penguins' site fidelity is influenced by sea-ice concentrations and individual behavioral repeatability, demonstrating a balance between consistency and flexibility to adapt to environmental changes.

Mercury biomagnification in a Southern Ocean food web

Jose Seco et al.

Ashley C. McKenzie et al.

Summary: Mercury is a pervasive environmental contaminant in seabirds that can cause adverse health effects. This study analyzed mercury concentrations in Adelie penguin egg membranes and chick feathers to understand mercury bioavailability and found that different breeding colonies had similar diets while chick diets varied by colony. The study also showed a significant relationship between mercury concentrations and trophic levels in the food chain, suggesting biomagnification of mercury.

Monitoring of mercury in the mesopelagic domain of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans using body feathers of Bulwer's petrel as a bioindicator

Ricardo Furtado et al.

Summary: Global mercury pollution has increased significantly over the past 70 years, especially affecting biota in the mesopelagic layers of the open ocean. The Bulwer's petrel serves as a valuable bioindicator for monitoring mercury contamination in the mesopelagic domain. Research indicates that mercury levels in the Pacific Ocean are significantly lower compared to the Atlantic Ocean, although higher contamination levels persist in mesopelagic organisms in the Atlantic at tropical and subtropical latitudes.

Horizontal-vertical movement relationships: Adelie penguins forage continuously throughout provisioning trips

Summary: The foraging behavior of Adelie penguins is influenced by changes in horizontal movement persistence rather than following traditional optimal foraging models. Environmental conditions during different chick-rearing stages also impact penguins' movement at Bechervaise Island. Therefore, integrating spatial location and behavioral data is crucial for inferring habitat use.
