Summary: Winter leaf retention promotes the persistence of nucleopolyhedroviruses on bush lupines, increasing the infection risk of caterpillars feeding on the foliage. Leaf retention also reduces viral exposure for younger caterpillars on the ground. Higher infection rates in early spring due to greater retention of contaminated leaves lead to reduced herbivory and increased plant inflorescence density by summer. Young caterpillars exposed to less litterfall are more likely to starve but less likely to die from infection, suggesting foliage-mediated exposure to viruses.
