Conceptual and methodological advances in habitat-selection modeling: guidelines for ecology and evolution

Joseph M. Northrup et al.

Summary: Habitat selection is a fundamental animal behavior that affects a wide range of ecological processes. Technological and methodological advances in the past 20 years have led to a surge in studies addressing this process, but there is a lack of guidance on best analytical practices. This paper provides a non-technical overview and synthesis of literature on habitat-selection analyses, aiming to clarify the complex literature while serving as a reference and best practices guide for practitioners.

A novel framework to operationalise value-pluralism in environmental valuation: Environmental value functions

Pirta Palola et al.

Summary: Traditional environmental valuation methods have focused on total and absolute values, neglecting value pluralism and marginal changes. This study introduces a new valuation framework, Environmental Value Functions (EVF), which incorporates value pluralism and marginal value analysis.

The Cantabrian capercaillie: A population on the edge

Jose Jimenez et al.

Summary: The capercaillie, the world's largest grouse, has only two remaining populations in Spain, with severe declines in the Cantabrian population being classified as Critically Endangered. The study estimated the population size in the entire Cantabrian mountain range at 191 individuals, with an 83% reduction in population range since the 1970s, and a population size at around 10% of that estimated in 1978.

Use of Individual Tree and Product Level Data to Improve Operational Forestry

Robert F. Keefe et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the current status of individual tree detection methods and technologies, explores knowledge gaps in operational forestry and forest operations research, and proposes several areas for improved efficiencies in forest operations, such as using wearable technology to map seedlings during planting, optimizing harvesting and landing based on prior information, and networking product tracking across multiple machines.

Canopy palm cover across the Brazilian Amazon forests mapped with airborne LiDAR data and deep learning

Ricardo Dalagnol et al.

Summary: This study quantified palm cover in the Brazilian Amazon using deep learning and high-resolution LiDAR data, revealing uneven distribution of palm cover with hotspots in certain areas. Palm cover was positively correlated with forest height, but may not be visible in taller forests.

Forest disturbance and growth processes are reflected in the geographical distribution of large canopy gaps across the Brazilian Amazon

Cristiano Rodrigues Reis et al.

Summary: The distribution of canopy gaps in the Brazilian Amazon varies geographically and is influenced by natural processes and human disturbance. Southeastern forests and regions with strong wind, lightning, and water shortage have a higher proportion of large gaps.

Developing a site index model for P. Pinaster stands in NW Spain by combining bi-temporal ALS data and environmental data

Juan Guerra-Hernandez et al.

Summary: The study aimed to develop a site index model for Pinus pinaster Ait. in northwest Spain using bi-temporal ALS data and various environmental variables. The model, based on ALS metrics and environmental factors, provided estimates of site productivity through site quality curves. By testing the GADA formulation derived from Bertalanffy's base model, the study found that it produced the best estimates of dominant height for P. pinaster stands in Galicia. The proposed model requires two sets of ALS data for estimating site-specific parameters, with the use of MARS equations enabling the development of spatially-explicit predictive maps for parameter values.

A new remote sensing-based carbon sequestration potential index (CSPI): A tool to support land carbon management

Adrian Pascual et al.

Summary: Integrating remote sensing into assessments of carbon stocks and fluxes has enhanced our understanding of how global change impacts landscapes and our ability to support forest management decision-making. Using airborne laser scanning data and multi-source satellite imagery, a Carbon Sequestration Potential Index (CSPI) was developed for the Hawaiian Islands, revealing high variation in potential across islands and ecosystems. The CSPI provides a rapid, spatially-explicit assessment of Hawaiian forest reserves to help stewardship agencies contribute to state carbon neutrality goals.

Leaf-Off and Leaf-On UAV LiDAR Surveys for Single-Tree Inventory in Forest Plantations

Yi-Chun Lin et al.

Summary: LiDAR technology has been proven effective for forest inventory and management, with the use of UAV platforms gaining popularity for providing high-resolution point clouds. The ability to map under canopy features with UAV LiDAR surveys depends on penetration degree, determined by canopy cover. This study investigates the impact of leaf cover scenarios on UAV survey quality and proposes an individual tree detection approach that outperforms existing algorithms.

Using enhanced data co-registration to update Spanish National Forest Inventories (NFI) and to reduce training data under LiDAR-assisted inference

A. Pascual et al.

Summary: By upgrading NFI plot positions using commercial-grade GNSS, the accuracy of ABA models was improved, resulting in a decrease in RMSE error and variability. The upgraded ABA models required fewer training sample plots and helped control the variability of errors.
