Estimation of global karst carbon sink from 1950s to 2050s using response surface methodology

Bin Jia et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a method to estimate the global karst carbon sink and analyzes the suitability of the response surface methodology and the fluctuating variation of karst carbon sink in global karst regions. The proposed method reduces the time of numerical calculation and is suitable for application in global weathering models. The future global karst carbon sink not only shows an upward trend but also exhibits significant fluctuations, possibly due to global warming.

Vegetation greenness and photosynthetic phenology in response to climatic determinants

Chaoya Dang et al.

Summary: Vegetation phenology is an important indicator of vegetation-climate interactions and carbon sink changes. This study investigated the temporal and spatial variability of vegetation phenology using the double logistic (DL) method. The results showed that the length of the growing season for greenness phenology was longer than photosynthetic phenology, and photosynthetic phenology varied more over time than greenness phenology.

Assessment of the importance of increasing temperature and decreasing soil moisture on global ecosystem productivity using solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence

Chaoya Dang et al.

Summary: Accurate assessment of global gross primary productivity (GPP) is crucial for estimating the global carbon cycle. This study uses solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) as a proxy for GPP and investigates the impact of soil moisture (SM) and temperature (Ts) changes on SIF. The results show that Ts plays a more important role in SIF in 60% of the vegetation areas, but the importance of SM and Ts varies across different vegetation types and climate zones.

Unequal weakening of urbanization and soil salinization on vegetation production capacity

Qingwei Zhuang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the joint impact of climate, urbanization, soil, and agricultural management practices (AMPs) on the net primary productivity (NPP) of the farmland ecosystem. The results show that climate variables play a major role in driving NPP growth, while AMPs have a positive contribution. Soil salinization has a more significant negative effect on NPP than urbanization. This study provides new insights on the mechanism of NPP variations and has implications for sustainable agriculture and food security.

Future reversal of warming-enhanced vegetation productivity in the Northern Hemisphere

Yichen Zhang et al.

Summary: Vegetation productivity in the Northern Hemisphere has increased under climate change, but the correlations with summer temperature are projected to decrease by the end of the century. This could have implications for the terrestrial carbon sink. The relationship between summer vegetation productivity and temperature will become negative in temperate and boreal regions by the late twenty-first century, while Arctic vegetation productivity continues to increase with further summer warming. This suggests that photosynthetic thermal acclimation may mitigate the negative impacts of future warming on vegetation.

Worldwide impacts of atmospheric vapor pressure deficit on the interannual variability of terrestrial carbon sinks

Bin He et al.

Summary: The interannual variability of atmospheric vapor pressure deficit has global impacts on terrestrial carbon sinks and atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations. It is necessary to determine the dominating factors affecting the carbon sink's interannual variability in order to improve predictions of future carbon sinks. This study shows that vapor pressure deficit significantly impacts net ecosystem production and the interannual variability of atmospheric CO2 growth rate, highlighting its importance in assessing ecosystems' responses to future climate conditions.

Warming-induced increase in carbon uptake is linked to earlier spring phenology in temperate and boreal forests

Hongshuang Gu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of temperature on the spring phenology of the previous growing season and the current year. The findings suggest that warmer temperatures during the previous growing season are associated with earlier spring phenology in the current year, and that increased photosynthesis in the previous growing season contributes to the earlier spring phenology.

The global decline in the sensitivity of vegetation productivity to precipitation from 2001 to 2018

Xiang Zeng et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the sensitivity of vegetation productivity to precipitation (S-ppt) across the global land using multiple streams of satellite observations. The results show consistent spatial patterns of S-ppt, with higher values in dry regions and lower values in humid regions. Temporally, S-ppt has generally declined over the past two decades, but with clear spatial heterogeneities. The decline in S-ppt is especially noticeable in North America and Europe, while regions like central Russia and Australia show increasing trends. Grasslands, in particular, appear to be increasingly vulnerable to climatic variability with continuing global climate change.

Increasing sensitivity of dryland vegetation greenness to precipitation due to rising atmospheric CO2

Yao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study examines the changes in the sensitivity of vegetation to precipitation over the past four decades using satellite observations and statistical learning approach. The results show increased precipitation sensitivity in drylands and decreased sensitivity in wet regions. Model simulations suggest that elevated CO2 is the main contributing factor to these contrasting trends.

Moisture availability mediates the relationship between terrestrial gross primary production and solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence: Insights from global-scale variations

Anping Chen et al.

Summary: This study reveals significant spatial variations in the GPP/SIF ratio in ecosystems across the globe, which are strongly modulated by climate variables. There is a consistent decrease in GPP/SIF from cold-and-wet to hot-and-dry climates. Empirical modeling using machine learning shows promise in improving ecosystem production modeling and quantifying uncertainty in global terrestrial biosphere models, highlighting the need for targeted field and experimental studies to better understand observed patterns.

Climate Warming Consistently Reduces Grassland Ecosystem Productivity

Gao-Lin Wu et al.

Summary: This study found that aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) of all major grassland types in northern China consistently declined over the past 30 years, on average by about 6.1%. The primary factor driving this decrease was warming, increased solar radiation, and resulting soil temperature rise. Alpine and lowland grasslands were more sensitive to climate change compared to temperate grasslands.
