A trait database for southern African freshwater invertebrates

Oghenekaro N. Odume et al.

Summary: Invertebrates are important indicators of ecosystem health. Their traits can be used for impact diagnosis and assemblage prediction, as well as to understand ecosystem functional responses to stressors. However, the lack of trait information and a local trait database for southern African invertebrates hinders the use of this approach for biological monitoring. To address this gap, a trait database for southern African freshwater invertebrates was compiled, providing information on 40 trait categories and taxonomic flexibility.

Tackling inconsistencies among freshwater invertebrate trait databases: harmonising across continents and aggregating taxonomic resolution

Stefan Kunz et al.

Summary: The use of invertebrate traits for research in freshwater ecology allows for large-scale comparisons, but inconsistencies in trait definitions pose challenges, especially when harmonizing definitions across different databases and aggregating traits.

Advancing biological invasion hypothesis testing using functional diversity indices

David Renault et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of invasive species on native communities and recipient ecosystems using functional diversity indices, showing that functional diversity of the recipient community may strongly vary at the onset of the invasion process and stabilize at intermediate and high levels of invasion. However, there is still a lack of research on functional changes during the lag phase of an invasion.

Estimation of functional diversity and species traits from ecological monitoring data

Alexey Ryabov et al.

Summary: Monitoring functional diversity is crucial in addressing climate change and biodiversity loss. This study demonstrates the use of diffusion maps to reconstruct species traits directly from monitoring data and estimate functional diversity. The wider application of this method to existing data could greatly advance the analysis of changes in functional biodiversity.

The dimensionality and structure of species trait spaces

David Mouillot et al.

Summary: Trait-based ecology aims to understand the impact of organismal trait diversity on ecosystem functioning and involves clustering species based on traits to identify those with unique combinations. A synthesis across multiple datasets shows a trade-off between trait space quality and operability between three to six dimensions, with low but variable robustness to trait omission. Invariant scaling relationships are highlighted, showing that as species richness increases, the number of unique species saturates while species disproportionately pack in the richest cluster.
