Investigating the trade-offs between the supply and demand for ecosystem services for regional spatial management

Yuan Yuan et al.

Summary: Understanding the supply and demand characteristics of ecosystem services and their trade-offs is crucial for effective ecosystem management. This study evaluated the supply, demand, and trade-offs of multiple ecosystem services in Changzhi, China, and proposed an urban spatial management framework based on the trade-offs and importance of different ecological functions. The results showed spatial heterogeneity in the supply and demand of ecosystem services, as well as trade-offs and synergies among different services. The study identified spatial mismatches and deficits in certain areas, providing a basis for spatial planning and ecosystem management.

Linking ecosystem service supply and demand to landscape ecological risk for adaptive management: The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau case

Yuanxin Liu et al.

Summary: This study integrates the risk of ecosystem service supply and demand into comprehensive ecological risk assessment, quantifying the spatiotemporal variations in soil retention, carbon sequestration, and water yield in Qinghai Province during 2010-2020. The results reveal spatial heterogeneity in ecosystem service supply and demand risk and ecological risk. The research provides an innovative method for comprehensive ecological risk assessment.

Integrating ecological and social vulnerability assessment in Qinghai Province, China

Yanmin Teng et al.

Summary: This study assessed the ecological and social vulnerability of Qinghai Province using a vulnerability assessment framework. The results showed that ecological vulnerability increased from east to west and decreased from north to south, while social vulnerability showed an opposite trend. Overall vulnerability decreased over time, but increased in some local areas. These findings can help identify key vulnerable areas and provide guidance for sustainable development strategies.

NPP plays a constraining role on water-related ecosystem services in an alpine ecosystem of Qinghai, China

Ruifang Hao et al.

Summary: Understanding the constraint effects of ecosystem services is helpful for formulating reasonable measures of ecosystem service protection. In Qinghai Plateau, exploring the threshold and scale effects of net primary production (NPP) on water-related ecosystem services and analyzing the influencing factors are crucial for maintaining its status as the "Asian Water Towers." The results showed that the shapes of the constraint lines varied with scale and environmental factors.

Identifying key areas of imbalanced supply and demand of ecosystem services at the urban agglomeration scale: A case study of the Fujian Delta in China

Ruhong Xin et al.

Summary: The study reveals significant spatial heterogeneity and imbalance between the supply and demand of ESs at the urban agglomeration scale. Urbanization has led to supply shortages in some cities, a diverse and polarizing trend in the matching degree between ES supply and demand, and a mild to extreme level of coordination between ESs supply and demand, with some cities experiencing increasing levels of extreme incoordination with increasing urbanization.
