Sources, trophodynamics, contamination and risk assessment of toxic metals in a coastal ecosystem by using a receptor model and Monte Carlo simulation

Xiang Gu et al.

Summary: The study found that the main source of heavy metal pollution in the coastal ecosystem of Jiaozhou Bay is anthropogenic, with zinc showing the highest concentration. Although the risk of human health from eating seafood is relatively low, the pollution of HMs still needs to be further controlled to protect the ecosystem.

Bioaccumulation of 10 trace elements in juvenile fishes of the Lower Parana River, Argentina: implications associated with essential fish growing habitat

Sabina Llamazares Vegh et al.

Summary: This study assessed the concentration, bioconcentration, and bioaccumulation of ten trace elements in juvenile fishes in the Lower Parana River. The results showed that all studied species bioaccumulate certain elements and that feeding habits determine trace element concentrations, with significant differences observed between trophic guilds. Further studies are necessary to understand differential behavior between different species within the aquatic web, particularly in the crucial nursery area of the Parana floodplain.

The concentration and biomagnification of trace metals and metalloids across four trophic levels in a marine food web

Alethea S. Madgett et al.

Summary: This study examined the variability of concentrations of heavy metals and metalloids in different species from different trophic levels in Scotland, and calculated trophic magnification factors (TMFs) to assess and predict biomagnification risk. It was concluded that a balance in sample numbers of lower- versus higher trophic level organisms is recommended when calculating TMFs, and appropriate species selection is vital to ensure accurate representation of the ecosystem.

Occurrence, partition, and risk of seven heavy metals in sediments, seawater, and organisms from the eastern sea area of Shandong Peninsula, Yellow Sea, China

Summary: This study found that heavy metals in the marine ecosystem of the eastern sea area of Shandong Peninsula in China mainly come from terrestrial sources, with higher concentrations in sediments and seawater. Concentrations of heavy metals in mollusc were generally higher and poses potential risks.

Cadmium Accumulation and Kinetics in Solea senegalensis Tissues under Dietary and Water Exposure and the Link to Human Health

Maria D. Pavlaki et al.

Summary: The study found that cadmium accumulation in different tissues of Solea senegalensis followed the order of muscle, gills, liver, and intestine when exposed to cadmium-contaminated diet and water. After 14 days of uptake, muscle showed lower cadmium accumulation, with the intestine having the highest uptake flux. Cadmium depuration from the liver was not detected, indicating a possible storage compartment for cadmium in Solea senegalensis.

Cadmium-Induced Kidney Injury: Oxidative Damage as a Unifying Mechanism

Liang-Jun Yan et al.

Summary: Cadmium, a nonessential metal heavily polluting the environment, can cause chronic damage to the kidneys, mainly accumulating in and damaging the proximal tubule of nephrons. Oxidative damage serves as a unifying mechanism for cadmium-induced renal toxicity, with antioxidants potentially ameliorating the injury.

Toxicity mechanisms of arsenic compounds in aquatic organisms

Eunjin Byeon et al.

Summary: Arsenic, a toxic metalloid, is widely distributed in aquatic environments predominantly in its inorganic form, with its acute and chronic toxicities being dependent on its chemical speciation and concentration. While biotransformation mechanisms and speciation of arsenic have been studied, further research is needed on the relationships among speciation, toxicity, and bioavailability in biological systems.

Summary: The study in major rivers of Pakistan found high concentrations of mercury and nickel exceeding global rivers authorities' standards. Moderate to high contamination levels were observed for mercury, nickel, and lead, with lower levels for chromium, copper, and zinc. Mercury and nickel showed severe enrichment at all sampling sites.

Trophic transfer of heavy metals in the marine food web based on tissue residuals

Yongfei Gao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the concentrations of metals in various organs of 17 marine species and found that liver, gill, and muscle tissues are ideal indicators for analyzing metal contamination in marine environments. The results showed both bio-dilution and tissue-specific bio-magnification of metals in the studied food web, emphasizing the importance of tissue-specific considerations in enhancing risk assessment of metal elements in wildlife and human health.
