Supply and demand dynamics of hydrologic ecosystem services in the rapidly urbanizing Taihu Lake Basin of China

Yu Tao et al.

Summary: Integrating supply and demand of ecosystem services in rapidly urbanizing areas is challenging but essential. This study developed a spatially explicit approach to analyze the supply and demand dynamics of water purification and flood mitigation in the Taihu Lake Basin of eastern China. The results revealed a spatial mismatch between high supply and demand, with high supply in mountainous areas and high demand in urban and agricultural areas. The decrease in water purification and increase in flood mitigation demand were mainly attributed to urban expansion. Land use composition and configuration were found to have strong associations with demand and supply at the sub-basin scale. The findings provide valuable insights for sustainable land management in urbanizing watersheds.

The impacts of land use change on flood protection services among multiple beneficiaries

Jaramar Villarreal-Rosas et al.

Summary: Land use change has led to significant declines in ecosystem services globally, impacting different beneficiaries unevenly. This study focused on the Brigalow Belt Bioregion in Australia to assess how land use change affects flood protection for urban residents, rural communities, and the food sector. Results showed net declines in flood protection for all sectors, with urban residents experiencing the greatest impact.

Mapping basin-scale supply-demand dynamics of flood regulation service-A case study in the Baiyangdian Lake Basin, China

Jian Li et al.

Summary: This study explores the dynamic changes in the supply-demand relationship of Flood Regulation Service (FRS) in rapidly urbanizing basins. By proposing the Supply-Demand Ratio (SDR) method, the authors successfully quantify the supply and demand of FRS and find that the imbalance of FRS supply and demand intensifies and is related to rapid urbanization. Therefore, the authors suggest proactive policies be adopted to defend against flood disaster risks in future urban construction.

A nature-based solution in forest management to improve ecosystem services and mitigate their trade-offs

Shuai Ma et al.

Summary: The use of monoculture plantations for forest restoration has increased globally, but it can reduce ecosystem services and result in trade-offs. Effective management is crucial for achieving sustainable development. This study evaluated ecosystem services in bamboo forests in China and proposed scenarios to reduce trade-offs. The results showed that expanding bamboo forests increased some services but decreased others. Intercropping bamboo forests can generate income, improve various ecosystem services, and eliminate trade-offs.

Increasing urban flood risk in China over recent 40 years induced by LUCC

Kaisheng Luo et al.

Summary: Urbanization-induced land use/cover change has a significant impact on China's urban flood regulation service (UFRS), especially on urban pluvial floods. The study reveals that China's UFRS has declined over time and space, indicating that urbanization in China has increased the risk of urban pluvial floods.

Assessment of the flood mitigation ecosystem service in a coastal wetland and potential impact of future urban development in Chile

Octavio Rojas et al.

Summary: A worldwide increase in flooding is expected due to climate change and population growth, particularly in coastal areas. Therefore, nature-based solutions for risk reduction are necessary, especially in developing countries. This study analyzed the flood mitigation ecosystem service of a coastal wetland in central Chile and found that urban project development has intensified, leading to a reduction in wetland area and an increase in flood risk and vulnerability.

Evaluating the runoff storage supply-demand structure of green infrastructure for urban flood management

Chunlin Li et al.

Summary: Rapid urbanization has reduced green infrastructure and increased urban flood risks. A study evaluating the runoff storage supply-demand structure in Shenyang found limited and fragmented runoff storage supply in the city center, with significantly higher demand compared to suburban areas. As rainfall increases, the supply decreases and demand rises, challenging the balance between supply and demand.

A methodology for assessing spatio-temporal dynamics of flood regulating services

Stefano Mori et al.

Summary: This study examines the spatio-temporal dynamics of flood regulating ecosystem services and their supply and demand in the Arno River basin in central Italy. Results show that in the last decades, there have been changes in both the demand and supply of ecosystem services, with urbanization leading to increased demand for flood regulation, while land use changes have decreased the basin's capacity for flood regulation.

Policy delivery gaps in the land-based flood risk management in China: A wider partnership is needed

Shiqiang Du et al.

Summary: The study reveals that three main strategies are used to enhance flood detention function and reduce flood risk inside FDZs in China: returning parts of FDZs to rivers, flood-adaptive farming, and reducing population density through massive relocation. However, local residents have a low willingness to engage, mainly due to poor perception of policies and lack of short-term economic attractiveness. Policy delivery gaps exist and information sharing should be enhanced to encourage public participation.

A new multiple return-period framework of flood regulation service-applied in Yangtze River basin

Ju Shen et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new framework that integrates multiple flood return periods to assess the expected annual EFRS supply and demand in the Yangtze River Basin, China. The results show that EFRS demand increases dramatically with the return period, while EFRS supply remains relatively constant. Considering upstream EFRS supply can reduce the number of unsatisfied sub-basins, highlighting the importance of catchment-wide EFRS management.

Incorporating the implementation intensity of returning farmland to lakes into policymaking and ecosystem management: A case study of the Jianghuai Ecological Economic Zone, China

Shuai Ma et al.

Summary: The implementation of the policy of returning farmland to lakes has led to significant changes in land use/land cover and affected trade-offs of ecosystem services. Different intensities of this policy result in varying impacts on ecosystem services, suggesting that policy makers should consider the intensity of implementation in decision making and ecosystem management. This study provides valuable insights for choosing the optimal restoration intensity of lakes and wetlands.
