Copula-based multivariate standardized drought index (MSDI) and length, severity, and frequency of hydrological drought in the Upper Sakarya Basin, Turkey

Tugrul Varol et al.

Summary: Drought, a significant threat to social life, is examined and analyzed by its types, and it is crucial for decision-makers to have advanced methods for monitoring and assessing drought. Multivariate drought indices were developed to overcome the limitations of current methods and accurately determine the level of drought. In a specific region with different characteristics, MSDI was modeled based on SPEI and SRI data, showing acceptable performance in estimating drought across multiple perspectives and time scales.

Domestic and foreign decoupling of economic growth and water consumption and its driving factors in the Brazilian economy

Marco Antonio Montoya et al.

Summary: This study combines the water footprint and virtual water trade balance to investigate the decoupling of GDP and consumption water footprint in Brazil. The results show a negative decoupling between consumption water footprint and GDP, with a higher impact on water resources from the export agenda compared to the domestic market. Primary-exporting sectors, especially agriculture and livestock, strongly influence this result.

Pollution Haven or Halo? How European countries leverage FDI, energy, and human capital to alleviate their ecological footprint

Najia Saqib et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between economic growth and ecological footprint for 16 European countries from 1990 to 2020. The empirical analysis reveals some correlations, including a negative correlation between foreign direct investment and ecological footprint, and an inverted U-shaped curve between GDP and ecological footprint, supporting the environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis. Furthermore, renewable energy is found to have a negative correlation with ecological footprint, while energy structure has a positive correlation.

Impact of the digital economy on high-quality urban economic development: Evidence from Chinese cities

Bingnan Guo et al.

Summary: The establishment of China's big data comprehensive pilot zones has accelerated the development of the digital economy by promoting the integration of big data and cloud computing. By analyzing the impact of the digital economy on high-quality urban economic development, using data from China and employing a difference-in-differences approach, our study found that the digital economy significantly stimulates economic development by improving human capital and promoting green technology innovation. Additionally, the digital economy can alleviate the crowding effect in developed areas, providing a solid foundation for high-quality economic development. Our findings offer new insights into the real impact of the digital economy on urban economic development.

Spatiotemporal patterns and mechanisms of land-use conflicts affecting high-quality development in China

Bo Han et al.

Summary: Rapid urbanization in China has caused widespread land-use conflicts (LUCs), and understanding the spatiotemporal patterns and mechanisms is crucial for supporting high-quality development (HQD). This study evaluates the evolution and association mechanisms of LUCs and HQD in Chinese counties from 2000 to 2020, providing insights for optimizing land-use policies under different regional contexts.

Can China achieve ecological sustainability? An LMDI analysis of ecological footprint and economic development decoupling

Meiyi Xin et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the decoupling between ecological footprint and economic growth using the Tapio decoupling model, and identifies the driving factors of decoupling at national and provincial levels using the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) decomposition methods. The driving factors include industrial structural, technological innovation, economic development, and population size. The study finds that there is an upward trend in ecological footprint, particularly in the northwest region where it has increased by over 100%. The decoupling state shows spatial distribution characteristics, with the northeastern region in negative decoupling. Technological innovation plays a positive and leading role in decoupling, while economic development inhibits it. Countermeasures and approaches to promote the decoupling of ecological footprint and economic growth are suggested, providing a basis for further analysis of environmental governance in China and promoting the decoupling process in other developing countries.

Impact of economic development and environmental regulations on greywater footprint loads in the Yellow River Basin in China

Qiuya Zhao et al.

Summary: The Yellow River Basin is a crucial ecological and economic area in China, and the country has implemented a national strategy to promote ecological preservation and sustainable development in the basin. This study used provincial data from 2005 to 2020 to analyze the economic-water system in the Yellow River Basin and explore the relationship between economic development and greywater footprint loads. The results show that environmental regulations can enhance the inhibitory effect of economic development on greywater footprint loads.

The relationship between resource utilization and high-quality development in the context of carbon neutrality: Measurement, assessment and identification

Zhizhuo Zhang et al.

Summary: This study developed an integrated framework to quantify regional resource utilization level and explore its relationship with regional development quality. Through data analysis and assessment, the study found that overall resource utilization efficiency has improved, but there is input redundancy in upstream cities. Additionally, the high-quality development index shows an increasing trend, but spatial disequilibrium among regions is the main issue.
