Coupling coordination and spatiotemporal heterogeneity between urbanization and ecological environment in Shaanxi Province, China

Chao Zou et al.

Summary: Rapid urbanization has led to the destruction of the ecosystem's structure and function, resulting in severe ecological and environmental problems that hinder sustainable development. Using statistical data from Shaanxi Province, this study analyzes the coordination and spatial heterogeneity between urbanization and the ecological environment. The results show a steady upward trend in overall urbanization and ecological environment, with the growth rate of the latter lower than that of urbanization. There are significant spatial differences in the coupling and coordination development state, and the interaction between urbanization and ecological environment factors is significant, with urbanization inhibiting the ecological environment to varying degrees.

Ecological-social-economic system health diagnosis and sustainable design of high-density cities: An urban agglomeration perspective

Dawei Wang et al.

Summary: Affected by urban diseases, the sustainable development of high-density cities is facing great pressure. Existing health evaluation methods have difficulties in reflecting the internal mechanism of the system with non-uniform evaluation indices, thus a new model is proposed to study the health and design mechanisms of urban systems. The results show that the new model is reliable and reasonable, and in developing countries, the quality of ecosystems and the development level of social systems are important factors affecting the health of high-density cities. Additionally, the research methods can be applied to the planning and design of high-density cities in other developing countries.

Interactive coercive relationship and spatio-temporal coupling coordination degree between tourism urbanization and eco-environment: A case study in Western China

Mengyao Ma et al.

Summary: The deteriorating eco-environment is a crucial factor limiting the development of tourism urbanization in the western region. This study constructs a comprehensive evaluation index system and examines the interaction relationship between tourism urbanization and eco-environment in western China from 2005 to 2019. The findings reveal that tourism urbanization has been rapidly increasing while eco-environment quality shows a fluctuating and slow upward trend. The relationship between tourism urbanization and eco-environment follows an inverted U-shaped curve, confirming the Kuznets hypothesis. The degree of coupling coordination has transitioned from serious imbalance to superior balance, with an interaction type of superior balanced-eco-environment lag. The spatial connection of coupling coordination exhibits complexity and gradient, forming a pattern of adjacent associations between provinces.

Driving factors of the variation of ecosystem service and the trade-off and synergistic relationships in typical karst basin

Jiang Yuan et al.

Summary: This study simulated and analyzed the ecosystem service functions of surface and underground runoff, as well as surface sediment yield in a typical karst basin in Southwest China. The results showed that these ecosystem service functions are influenced by rainfall reduction, land use changes, and the succession of rocky desertification. There are trade-offs and synergistic relationships between these ecosystem service functions.

Summary: This study proposes a system to evaluate the coordination between port industry chain development and the urban ecological environment using Shanghai Port as an example. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method and the Coupling Coordination Degree Model (CCDM) were applied to analyze the relationship between port industry development and the urban ecological environment. The research finds that the coupling coordination degree between Shanghai Port's economic development and the urban ecological environment is overall improving, but there is still room for improvement.

Coupling analysis on ecological environment fragility and poverty in South China Karst

Qiwei Chen et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the multi-dimensional poverty index is higher in the south, north, and northwest of Guizhou, while the overall ecological environment quality is higher in the west and lower in the east. There is a high coupling degree between the ecological vulnerability index of poor villages and the multi-dimensional poverty index, mainly showing moderate coordination and basic coordination. The results indicate that economic development in the east and ecological restoration in the west should be given more attention in the process of poverty reduction in Guizhou Province.

Evaluation of the coordination between eco-environment and socioeconomy under the Ecological County Strategy in western China: A case study of Meixian

Yi Yang et al.

Summary: This study examines the case of Meixian County and finds that the per capita ecological footprint decreased from 2011 to 2016, indicating an improvement in the quality of the eco-environment. Factors such as agricultural inputs and pollutants play important roles in restricting socioeconomic development, while local financial revenue, per capita kiwifruit income, and insurance coverage rates have significant effects on improving the eco-environment. The coordination between the eco-environment and economic system is growing at an average annual rate of 7.84%, reaching a coordinated state, while the coordination between the eco-environment and social system is increasing at an average annual rate of 15.25%, moving from imbalanced to highly coordinated state.
