Bacterial community response to chronic heavy metal contamination in marine sediments of the East China Sea

Haofeng Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of bacterial communities to chronic heavy metal contamination in marine sediments. The concentrations of seven heavy metals in sediments from the East China Sea were measured, and the structure of the bacterial community was characterized using Illumina Miseq 16S rRNA sequencing. The results showed that the bacterial community in sediments polluted with heavy metals had a different composition compared to relatively pristine sites. Weighted correlation network analysis revealed that certain bacterial modules were associated with heavy metal pollution. The study suggested that long-term exposure to low-concentration heavy metals led to shifts in the community composition of East China Sea sediments, with more tolerant bacteria replacing sensitive modules involved in global biogeochemical cycling.

Interaction and Assembly of Bacterial Communities in High-Latitude Coral Habitat Associated Seawater

Yu Chen et al.

Summary: Threatened by climate change and ocean warming, coral reef ecosystems have been shifting in geographic ranges toward a higher latitude area. This study focused on the microbial communities and their role in primary production in high-latitude coral habitats. The results showed that the community structure and assembly of bacterial and carbon-fixer communities were significantly influenced by environmental variables such as coral coverage, nitrite, DOC, and pH. The assembly processes were different between the surface and bottom water, with deterministic processes dominating in the surface water and stochastic processes dominating in the bottom water.

Summary: This paper reviews the current state of knowledge on the atmospheric nutrients and the biological effect of East Asian aerosol deposition on the northwest Pacific Ocean. The study reveals that East Asian aerosols have important influences on marine microbes and biogeochemical cycles in the downwind areas of the northwest Pacific Ocean. The impact of East Asian aerosol loadings is closely related to the amount, composition, and hydrological condition of the aerosol deposition. Future research should focus on these factors.

Summary: Comparing the microbial community diversity and composition in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems can enhance our understanding of microbial community assembly mechanisms and ecosystem responses to environmental change. This study found significant differences in bacterial community diversity and composition between lakeshore soils and lake sediments. Heterogeneous selection was identified as the dominant mechanism shaping these differences. Environmental factors such as temperature, salinity, organic carbon, and nitrogen were found to play important roles in determining bacterial community composition.
