Recovery of a marine keystone predator transforms terrestrial predator-prey dynamics

Gretchen H. Roffler et al.

Summary: Sea otters and wolves, two apex predators, have interacted for the first time after their ranges overlap, with sea otters becoming an abundant marine subsidy for wolves. The reintroduction and restoration of sea otters have caused a dietary switch in wolves, eliminating deer and linking nearshore and terrestrial food webs. This study highlights the unexpected nutrient pathway and cross-boundary subsidy cascades resulting from species restoration.

Middle-Scale Spatial and Temporal Patterns in Estuaries: Rocky Intertidal Macrobenthic Communities in the Hangzhou Bay and Zhoushan Sea

Hanren Liu et al.

Summary: Salinity gradient has a direct impact on the composition and distribution of biological communities in estuaries. This study analyzed a large dataset from Hangzhou Bay and Zhoushan Sea to investigate the relationship between salinity and seasonal gradients and macrobenthos distributions and community structures. The results showed distinct regional differences in the distribution, diversity, and community structures of macrobenthos, with abundance and biomass dominated by suspension feeders. Significant seasonal and regional differences were found, and water temperature, suspended particulate matter, and chlorophyll-a were identified as dominant factors for different regions.

Assessing the large-scale and long-term changes in the southern Gulf of Mexico benthic ecological status under natural and human-induced disturbances

Norma A. Santibanez-Aguascalientes et al.

Summary: Monitoring benthic fauna in the Gulf of Mexico is important for assessing its ecological status. The AZTI's Marine Biotic Index (AMBI) and multivariate AMBI (M-AMBI) were able to identify the effects of natural and human disturbance on benthic communities. These assessment methods provide baseline guidelines for determining the benthic ecological status of each sedimentary environment within the area.

Scale relationship between landscape pattern and water quality in different pollution source areas: A case study of the Fuxian Lake watershed, China

Shuangyun Peng et al.

Summary: This study focused on the scale relationship between landscape pattern and water quality in different pollution source areas within the Fuxian Lake basin. The research found that different landscape metrics have varying effects on water quality, with Shannon's diversity index (SDI) being a key factor across the entire watershed. The strongest impact of landscape pattern on water quality changes was observed in urban and phosphorus mining regions at sub-watershed scales, while in farmland and village regions, 300 m and 500 m were identified as the areas where landscape pattern had the strongest effect on water quality.

Tourism and urban development as drivers for invertebrate diversity loss on tropical islands

Sebastian Steibl et al.

Summary: This study compared the impact of tourism and urban island development on ground-associated invertebrate biodiversity and habitat composition on oceanic islands. It found that both tourism and urban land use significantly decrease species richness, abundance, and diversity of invertebrate communities on the islands. Habitat fragmentation and reduction in vegetation density were found to have significant effects on biodiversity on urban islands, while no link was found between land use/cover changes and biodiversity loss on tourist islands. The study provides direct evidence of terrestrial invertebrate loss on remote oceanic atoll islands due to different human land uses, with potential long-term consequences for the stability and resilience of oceanic island ecosystems.
