Revisiting the Relationship Between Urbanization and Economic Development in China Since the Reform and Opening-up

Liang Longwu et al.

Summary: This study calculates the contribution rate of China's urbanization to economic development and explores the causal relationship between urbanization and economic development by using the panel data cointegration test method. The results show that the contribution rate of urbanization to economic growth has a overall growth trend but with relatively low growth rate since 2012. Economic development is a significant factor in advancing urbanization and urbanization has a positive feedback effect on economic development. However, the impact of urbanization on economic development is relatively small and stable. The low level of coordination between urbanization and economic development has led to a downward trend in the contribution of new-type, people-oriented urbanization to economic growth in recent years. It is important for China to promote the coordinated development of urbanization and economy from low level to high level.

Coupling coordination degree for urban green growth between public demand and government supply in urban agglomeration: A case study from China

Jianchun Li et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the coupling coordination of urban green growth (UGG) between public demand and government supply. The results showed that citizens of Shandong Peninsula are generally satisfied with the government's supply in terms of environment, population, and life aspects. However, there exists a lack of balance in the coupling coordination degree of UGG within the urban agglomerations, with higher overall values in the eastern coast compared to the western inland areas. More focus on optimization objectives based on the evaluation results and external reasons for low coupling coordination degree are important for improving UGG.

Coupling coordination analysis and spatiotemporal heterogeneity between sustainable development and ecosystem services in Shanxi Province, China

Zheng Yang et al.

Summary: Excessive human activities pose a threat to sustainable development by damaging the structure and function of ecosystems. This study focuses on Shanxi Province, a typical resource-based area, and examines the relationship between ecosystem services (ESs) and sustainable development using the coupling coordination degree model and geographically and temporally weighted regression model. The findings reveal an overall increase in sustainable development level and ESs, except for soil retention. While the coupling coordination degree of soil retention and sustainable development decreases, other services show an upward trend. Habitat quality exhibits the strongest negative correlation with sustainable development. The study also identifies spatial and temporal heterogeneities in the coupling coordination degree and correlation of ecosystem services, which can inform efforts to promote regional sustainable development and optimize ecosystem decision-making.

Quantifying Dynamic Coupling Coordination Degree of Human-Environmental Interactions during Urban-Rural Land Transitions of China

Bowen Cai et al.

Summary: Urban-rural land transition and the coordination of coupled human-environmental systems are two important issues in global urban-rural development. This study investigated the dynamics of the coupling coordination degree (CCD) in China from 2001 to 2018 and quantified the CCD changes in land transitions. The findings show that CCD alterations mainly occurred in the decline of non-construction land stock, the increase of urban construction land stock, and especially the losses during rural residential land to non-construction land transfers. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to CCD transfers and losses during urban-rural transitions.

The coupling curve between urbanization and the eco-environment: China's urban agglomeration as a case study

Chuanglin Fang et al.

Summary: The study proposed the Urbanization-EKC (UEKC) hypothesis based on Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) theory, which suggests that eco-environment quality first deteriorates and then improves in the process of urbanization. Empirical analysis of 19 Chinese urban agglomerations found heterogeneous coupling curves between urbanization and eco-environment, with a U-shaped trend. In five mega-urban agglomerations, the turning point for eco-environmental quality improvement was identified at an urbanization rate of 47%.

The supply-consumption relationship of ecological resources under ecological civilization construction in China

Wenpeng Du et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that China's ecological resources are self-sufficient, but the self-sufficiency rate decreased from 202% to 144% as population and living consumption levels increased, resulting in a 10.12% rise in ecosystem pressure. While urbanized regions are demanding more ecological resources, they are offsetting the pressure by accessing remote ecological resources, causing ecological consumption to shift to other regions. The implementation of ecological civilization construction has harmonized development in urbanized areas, but there is a growing need for an inter-regional ecological payment transfer policy to ensure sustainable development in agricultural production regions and key ecological functional areas.
