Coastal reclamation mediates heavy metal fractions and ecological risk in saltmarsh sediments of northern Jiangsu Province, China

Jingyan Chen et al.

Summary: Coastal reclamation has created additional land for economic development, but also caused pollution and posed threats to sustainable development. This study investigated the distribution patterns, geochemical speciation, and ecological risks of heavy metals in sediment samples from reclaimed and non-reclaimed tidal flats. The results showed higher metal pollution levels in reclaimed sediments, and the presence of Spartina alterniflora could accelerate the deposition and transfer of metal pollutants caused by reclamation.

Blue Carbon in Coastal Phragmites Wetlands Along the Southern Baltic Sea

Uwe Buczko et al.

Summary: Coastal wetlands dominated by common reed are important for carbon storage and sequestration. This study quantified carbon stocks in six representative Phragmites wetland sites at the southern Baltic Sea coast and found an average carbon stock of 17.4 kg C m(-2) with significant variation between sites. Approximately 264,600 tons of blue carbon could be stored in the coastal reed belts along the DZBC. These findings highlight the importance of these unique ecotones for blue carbon storage and sequestration.

High-resolution mapping of losses and gains of Earth's tidal wetlands

Nicholas J. Murray et al.

Summary: Based on satellite data analysis, it was found that losses and gains of tidal wetlands were offsetting each other globally. Over the past two decades, there have been losses of 13,700 square kilometers and gains of 9700 square kilometers, resulting in a net change of -4000 square kilometers. 27% of these losses and gains were associated with direct human activities, while other changes were attributed to indirect drivers.

Increasing fragmentation and squeezing of coastal wetlands: Status, drivers, and sustainable protection from the perspective of remote sensing

Wenting Wu et al.

Summary: This study mapped the detailed status and trends of coastal wetlands in Fujian Province from 1994 to 2018 using Landsat images, revealing unprecedented losses mainly due to reclamation for aquaculture ponds, construction, and other purposes, resulting in a significant loss of coastal spaces. The interaction between the loss of coastal wetlands and seaward urbanization will lead to severe fragmentation and squeezing effects in the coastal zone, weakening the coastal protection from marine disasters provided by coastal wetlands.

Summary: This study proposed a time-series approach for monitoring the phenological change of marsh vegetation using the CCDC algorithm and Landsat and Sentinel-1 SAR images. The study found that the bimodal trajectory of phenology reflects two growth processes of marsh vegetation in one year, and precipitation, temperature, and frequency of water-level changes are the main driving factors for the spatio-temporal phenological evolution of different marsh vegetation.

Identification of Spartina alterniflora habitat expansion in a Suaeda salsa dominated coastal wetlands

Yuting Huang et al.

Summary: Spartina alterniflora, introduced into China in the 1980s, has had significant negative impacts on coastal wetlands by encroaching on native plant communities' habitat. The habitat of S. alterniflora expanded while the habitat of Suaeda salsa continuously fragmented. Habitat fragmentation and competition between S. alterniflora and Phragmites australis intensified, aggravating the reduction and fragmentation of S. salsa's habitat and threatening biodiversity and ecosystem stability.

The Effects of Tidal Flat Reclamation on the Stability of the Coastal Area in the Jiangsu Province, China, from the Perspective of Landscape Structure

Yanhui Chen et al.

Summary: Coastal wetlands, as one of the most important wetland systems, play a vital role in water conservation, climate regulation, and biodiversity protection. However, the landscape structure and function of coastal wetlands have been greatly affected by large-scale and long-term tidal flat reclamations. This study analyzed the spatio-temporal characteristics of the impact of tidal flat reclamation on regional ecology using remote sensing data, finding that the influence scope of tidal flat reclamation was approximately 30 km. The results showed an overall improvement in stability in the affected area, but the stability change characteristics varied greatly between reclamation and non-reclamation areas.

Summary: The study conducted at the tidal flat of the Liaohe Estuary Wetland established a comprehensive evaluation index of tidal flat ecological stability (ECO-CSI) and identified the driving factors and threshold values affecting the stability of the tidal flat. Human activities were found to be the major driving factors impacting the ecological stability of the tidal flat, while natural factors such as sediment discharge and precipitation played key roles in maintaining material supply. The study emphasized the importance of minimizing unreasonable human development activities to improve the stability of the tidal flat and ensure ecological security for the overall stability of the estuary wetland ecosystem.

Mapping coastal wetlands in the Yellow River Delta, China during 2008-2019: impacts of valid observations, harmonic regression, and critical months

Summary: Annual mapping of the Yellow River Delta wetland from 2008 to 2019 using time-series Landsat images revealed a significant expansion of Spartina alterniflora, encroaching on other vegetation types. The study found that the number of valid observations affects spatial and temporal classification accuracies, with harmonic regression features playing a crucial role in improving overall accuracies. Temporal distribution of observations was identified as more important than the quantity of observations for harmonic-based classification of coastal wetlands like the YRD.
