Talha Aksoy et al.

Summary: This study utilized UA data and CORINE data, as well as NDVI analysis, to examine land use and changes in Eskisehir, Turkey from 2012 to 2018. The results showed a 17.65% increase in artificial surfaces and an 18.32% increase in agricultural lands, natural lands, forests, and vegetation. Although there were differences between the analysis results based on CORINE data and UA data, the use of UA data in urban planning still had advantages. This study is important for monitoring urban changes and implementing European Council policies.

Assessing spatiotemporal variations and predicting changes in ecosystem service values in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area

Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: Rapid economic development and human interference in rapidly urbanized regions have caused significant land use/land cover change (LUCC), impacting ecosystem functions and services. This study examined and predicted the impact of LUCC on ecosystem service value (ESV) in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) in China from 1990 to 2030. The results showed that the expansion of built-up land had the clearest process during 1990-2015, leading to a decrease in total ESV. The study also demonstrated the effectiveness of the future land use simulation (FLUS) model in predicting future LUCC. The findings emphasize the importance of rational land use and ecological construction for the GBA, providing a reference for ecological planning and environmental protection.

Prediction and valuation of ecosystem service based on land use/land cover change: A case study of the Pearl River Delta

Bowen Li et al.

Summary: In recent decades, rapid economic development has led to a decline in ecosystem service values due to land use/land cover change. This study analyzed the land use change and evaluated the corresponding Ecosystem Service Values (ESVs) based on the land use/land cover change images of the PRD from 1990 to 2020. A future land use simulation model was also developed to simulate multiple scenarios in 2030. The results showed a significant increase in construction land area and a decrease in total ESVs. The study also ranked the contribution order of different ecosystem services and compared the values of ecosystem service in different scenarios.

Beyond city expansion: multi-scale environmental impacts of urban megaregion formation in China

Weiqi Zhou et al.

Summary: The environmental degradation caused by rapid urbanization is a pressing global issue. In the case of China, the massive and uneven urbanization from 2000 to 2015 resulted in overall less green and warmer urban areas with exacerbated PM2.5 pollution. However, the environmental impacts differed between newly developed and older areas of cities, with adverse impacts being more prominent in newly urbanized areas. Additionally, as cities expand and connect to form urban megaregions, regional environmental issues are emerging. Understanding the environmental consequences of internal city dynamics and the formation of urban megaregions is crucial in turning urbanization into an opportunity for sustainable development.

Spatial distribution patterns and potential exposure risks of urban floods in Chinese megacities

Chunlin Li et al.

Summary: This study analyzes urban flood records from 8 Chinese megacities to investigate the distribution patterns and influencing factors of urban flooding and assess the potential exposure risks to population, housing value, and traffic conditions. The results show significant clustering of flood points in all cities, with different mean distances between flood points. Patch Density of underlying surface, Green Space Ratio, and Road Density were identified as the main factors affecting urban flooding. The most vulnerable cities in terms of exposure risk were Tianjin, Shanghai, and Shanghai, while Beijing, Tianjin, and Beijing were the most vulnerable in terms of specific factors.

Modeling Trip-generation and Distribution using Census, Partially Correct Household Data, and GIS

Akash Anand et al.

Summary: The efficiencies of urban transport systems are greatly affected by rapid urbanization and the increase in private modes of transport. This study focuses on the development of models for trip generation and distribution using census and revealed preference data. The results show that applying corrections to zone-specific characteristics and using refined data significantly reduce prediction errors. Additionally, the use of GIS methods to determine distances between zones and the development of a reliable trip distribution model improve the accuracy of travel demand estimation.

Urban expansion simulation under constraint of multiple ecosystem services (MESs) based on cellular automata (CA)-Markov model: Scenario analysis and policy implications

Yan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study implemented an ecologically constrained urban expansion simulation model in Wuhan, China, based on an ordered weighted averaging operator aggregating multiple ecosystem services. Results indicate that incorporating constraints from ecosystem services is beneficial for ecological conservation, but excessive constraint intensity may lead to unintended consequences such as excessive loss of farmland and irregular urban patterns. A relatively softer constraint strategy was considered optimal for a win-win scenario between urban expansion and ecological conservation.

Summary: Shortfalls and mismatches between the supply and demand of ecosystem services can have detrimental effects on human wellbeing. This study developed a methodology to identify and address these mismatches by applying land use optimization, with a focus on heat mitigation, flood mitigation, and recreational services in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Results showed that optimized land use allocation could significantly improve the matching of supply and demand for these ecosystem services, leading to enhanced urban and regional sustainability.
