The effects of climate on land use/cover: a case study in Turkey by using remote sensing data

Ilknur Zeren Cetin et al.

Summary: Economic and industrial development have led to population concentration in cities, resulting in the urban heat island effect. This study analyzed the changes in the urban heat island effect in the central district of Bartin over the past 30 years and found increases in urban surfaces and land surface temperatures, as well as a decline in vegetation. The results emphasized the importance of increasing open and green areas to mitigate the negative effects of the urban heat island.

Investigation of the spatial and temporal variation of soil salinity using Google Earth Engine: a case study at Werigan-Kuqa Oasis, West China

Shilong Ma et al.

Summary: This study aims to observe the evolution of salinization in the Werigan-Kuqa River Oasis from 1996 to 2021 and analyze the driving factors using multi-source data and ensemble learning. The results show that salinization in the area has generally improved, with an increase in non-salinized land and a decrease in the area of highly salinized soil.

Analyzing and Modeling the Spatial-Temporal Changes and the Impact of GLOTI Index on Precipitation in the Marmara Region of Turkiye

Mehdi Aalijahan et al.

Summary: This study investigated past, present, and future changes in precipitation in the Marmara region, and examined the effects of global warming on this variable. The results showed that precipitation changes in the region were stronger than temperature changes, and only two stations showed a positive correlation with global temperature. The developed ANN model accurately simulated and predicted precipitation, showing an upward trend in the next seven years.

Ameneh Mianabadi et al.

Summary: The study reveals that rural-urban migration is primarily influenced by environmental degradation, economic factors, and government support programs. Despite challenging conditions, some individuals opt to remain in rural areas. Cultural and social factors play a significant role in individuals' decisions to stay in villages.

Soil Salinity Detection and Mapping in an Environment under Water Stress between 1984 and 2018 (Case of the Largest Oasis in Africa-Morocco)

Abdellatif Rafik et al.

Summary: Water stress is a major global problem and has already affected more than 400 million hectares of land. The Tafilalet plain in Morocco suffers from soil salinization, which can be detected and predicted using GIS tools and remote sensing. The study found that soil salinization in the Tafilalet oasis is mainly influenced by water stress and drought cycles. By using appropriate index models, the soil salinity can be effectively detected and predicted.

Examination of the Change in the Vegetation Around the Kirka Boron Mine Site by Using Remote Sensing Techniques

Mehmet Cetin et al.

Summary: The change in vegetation cover in Kirka boron mining site was examined using unsupervised classification and vegetation indexes from satellite images. The boundary of the mining area could not be determined using vegetation indexes, but unsupervised classification techniques revealed that the mining area occupies 1144.5 hectares. NDVI and NDRe analyses showed different results on water surfaces, while similar results were found in the rest of the areas. Sentinel satellite images, with higher spatial resolution, were able to capture more details compared to Landsat images in NDVI analyses.

Assessment of Soil Salinization Risk by Remote Sensing-Based Ecological Index (RSEI) in the Bosten Lake Watershed, Xinjiang in Northwest China

Jiawen Hou et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the Bosten Lake watershed, using remote sensing and GIS techniques to identify risk factors and extract information about soil salinization. The results show that remote sensing data can accurately classify land use types and correlate with measured soil salt content. In the model, elevation and NDVI are also correlated with the salt index. Finally, a risk assessment model is established, categorizing the soil salinization risk into four levels.

Field and Satellite Images-Based Investigation of Rivers Morphological Aspects

Ala Hassan Nama et al.

Summary: Process-based evaluations and geomorphological information on large-scale rivers are still limited worldwide, especially in less developed regions. This study investigates the morphology and its change of a specific reach in the Tigris River, Iraq using field and satellite-based investigations. The results show a steep bed slope, islands with a low altitude and elongated shape, as well as a mild sinuosity with alternating bars. The dominant particle sizes of the bed material are coarse and medium gravel, and satellite-based change detection reveals the fading out and disappearance of some secondary channels, the growth of many islands, and the movement of some bends downstream.

Sophie Thiam et al.

Summary: The study found that croplands in Djilor district increased by 17% from 1984 to 2017, while forests increased by 3%. In terms of salinity change, slightly saline areas increased by 42% in 2017, while highly saline and moderately saline areas decreased by 23% and 26%, respectively. Additionally, highly concentrated salty areas can be restored using salt-resistant plants like Eucalyptus and Tamarix species, providing valuable insights for land use planning and salinity management in coastal regions to enhance farmers' resilience.

Global climate shift in 1970s causes a significant worldwide increase in precipitation extremes

Subharthi Sarkar et al.

Summary: The shift in climate regimes around the 1970s resulted in an overall enhancement of precipitation extremes globally, with a specific spatial distribution pattern. The Annual Maximum Daily Precipitation (AMDP) is reported to increase for almost two-thirds of the global land area, leading to an increase in Probable Maximum Precipitation (PMP) globally. The recent increase in poleward heat and moisture transport may be associated with the spatial redistribution of precipitation extremes in the northern hemisphere.
