Long-time series assessment of the sustainable development of Xiamen City in China based on ecological footprint calculations

Juanjuan Dai et al.

Summary: Ecological footprint is a quantitative method to measure the environmental impact of human activities. It helps evaluate the sustainability of regional development. However, the traditional model fails to consider the ecological inequity caused by trade. Thus, a revised model is used to measure both consumptive and productive ecological footprints.

Ecological security assessment for megacities in the Yangtze River basin: Applying improved emergy-ecological footprint and DEA-SBM model

Yue Liu et al.

Summary: The environmental problems caused by intensive economic development and rapid urbanization have hindered the sustainable development of the social economy. This study assesses the ecological security levels in eight developed megacities located in the Yangtze River basin in China. The results provide policy recommendations for decision-makers to formulate strategies for ecological security and sustainable development. The study's findings offer a scientific reference for other megacities to mitigate ecological pressures by considering their local situations.

Ecological sustainability and its driving factor of urban agglomerations in the Yangtze River Economic Belt based on three-dimensional ecological footprint analysis

Yiyang Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ecological sustainability of urban agglomerations in the Yangtze River Economic Belt using a three-dimensional ecological footprint model and proposes ecological compensation methods. Findings show that the YREB is generally in an ecologically unsustainable state, mainly due to rapid economic development and improvements in living standards.

Spatiotemporal evolution of sustainable utilization of water resources in the Yangtze River Economic Belt based on an integrated water ecological footprint model

Peiran Jing et al.

Summary: Sustainable utilization of water resources is essential for water security and high-quality development. This study proposed an integrated model to examine the sustainability of water resources, taking into account the characteristics of water ecosystem and human water consumption. The results showed an upward trend in the sustainability of water resources in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, with variations among different regions.

Coupling coordination analysis of China's water resources utilization efficiency and economic development level

Yao Zhang et al.

Summary: This research develops an evaluation index system for assessing China's water resources utilization efficiency and economic development level. The study finds that the coordination between water resources and economy in China has gradually improved, but the level of coordination has not significantly increased. China continues to face challenges in terms of sustainable development of water resources utilization efficiency and economic development.

Environmental performance, biocapacity, carbon & ecological footprint of nations: Drivers, trends and mitigation options

Samuel Asumadu Sarkodie

Summary: The synergy between natural resource consumption and environmental sustainability has varied long-term effects across countries depending on economic structure. However, the transboundary effect of natural resource capital highlights the importance of environmental convergence. Evaluating ecological performance, biocapacity, and carbon footprint can reveal the socio-economic drivers of environmental performance and convergence. Research confirms the presence of environmental convergence among nations, implying that the gap in carbon and ecological footprint between higher-income and lower-income countries will narrow in the long term, underscoring the necessity of global cooperation towards achieving environmental sustainability.

Evaluating scenarios for carbon reduction using different tableware in China

Qing Sun et al.

Summary: Global consumption of disposable plastic tableware is massive due to its durability, lightness, and low cost. However, the CO2 emissions from using disposable plastic tableware are much higher compared to other types of tableware. Strategies like increasing recycling rates, using dishwashers for cleaning reusable plastic tableware, ceramic, and straw tableware, as well as replacing some disposable plastic tableware with reusable plastic tableware can significantly reduce carbon emissions.

Coupling analysis of urbanization and ecological total factor energy efficiency -- A case study from Hebei province in China

Feng Ren et al.

Summary: The study indicates that the level of urbanization in eastern Hebei, central Hebei, northern Hebei, and southern Hebei ranks from high to low, with room for improvement in each region. The overall trend of ecological total factor energy efficiency values of cities is increasing, and the coupling coordination degree is transitioning from a low-moderate stage to a moderate-high stage. This provides valuable reference for policymakers in formulating urbanization and energy efficiency policies.
