Three-dimensional agricultural water scarcity assessment based on water footprint: A study from a humid agricultural area in China

Yunan Yan et al.

Summary: This study proposes a three-dimensional agricultural water scarcity index by considering water quantity and quality, including blue water scarcity, green water scarcity, and grey water scarcity. It calculates the index for Liuyang City in China from 2010 to 2019 and investigates the impact of human and natural factors using the STIRPAT model. The results show water quantity scarcity in Liuyang City and exceeding of water shortage thresholds in drought years for blue and green water scarcity, but no water quality scarcity. Natural meteorological conditions have the greatest influence on the index, with meteorological factors inhibiting blue and grey water scarcity and promoting green water scarcity. Green water plays a significant role in crop growth, accounting for 42% of the crop's total water footprint.

The inhibitory effect of a water-saving irrigation regime on CH4 emission in Mollisols under straw incorporation for 5 consecutive years

Tangzhe Nie et al.

Summary: Through a multi-year in-situ experiment, it was found that consecutive five-year straw incorporation increased the content of NH4+-N, NO3--N, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC), resulting in a 4.42-5.84% increase in rice yield. Controlled irrigation significantly reduced CH4 emissions in Mollisols by 70.2-79.7%, and this reduction was more significant under five-year straw incorporation. The decrease in CH4 emissions under controlled irrigation was mainly due to the decrease in DOC content and the difference in relative abundance between methanogens and methanotrophs.

Three-way decision approach for water ecological security evaluation and regulation coupled with VIKOR: A case study in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region

Yafeng Yang et al.

Summary: Due to the significant correlation between human survival and water ecological security, the evaluation and regulation of water ecological security is of great importance. However, the current evaluation methods are not clear enough and lack the ability to accurately judge the grade of water ecological security, especially in complex and uncertain decision environments. This study proposes an evaluation indicator system based on the resilience idea and constructs a new three-way decision model for water ecological security evaluation, providing a new approach for evaluating water ecological security.

Health risks of industrial wastewater heavy metals based on improved grey water footprint model

Yuanyi Huang et al.

Summary: This study proposes an improved grey water footprint of industrial heavy metal emissions (GWFHMs) from the perspective of health risks, and estimates the water pollution level of GWFHMs (WPLHMs) to reveal the degree of aquatic industrial heavy metal pollution concerning health risks. The study uncovers critical periods and hotspot regions for heavy metal pollution in China, providing support for decision-making on control measures for industrial heavy metal emissions in Belt and Road Initiative (B&RI) countries.

Dynamic simulation and coupling coordination evaluation of water footprint sustainability system in Heilongjiang province, China: A combined system dynamics and coupled coordination degree model

Lili Jiang et al.

Summary: The evaluation of the sustainable utilization capacity of water resources is of great significance. This study proposed a water footprint sustainability system and used system dynamics to assess the influence of water resources on the environment, economy, and society. The results showed fluctuating increases in water footprints, except for gray water footprint, domestic water footprint, and industrial water footprint which exhibited fluctuating decreases. The predictions indicated stability in green water footprint, agricultural water footprint, and domestic water footprint, while other indicators would increase over time. Overall, the regional water footprint sustainability worsened, with varying degrees of coupling and coupling coordination in the system.

Scenarios and sustainability of the economy-nitrogen-resource-environment system using a system dynamic model on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Fangfang Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the dynamics of the economy-N-resource-environment (ENRE) system in a typical agricultural and pastoral area on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau were simulated. Four scenarios were established to assess the sustainability level and coupling coordination degrees (CCDs) of the three subsystems (economy, N-resource, and environment) from 2019 to 2030. The results showed that the ENRE system is at a weak sustainability level, and the subsystems are slightly unbalanced in terms of CCD level. The resource optimization scenario had the highest sustainability and CCD levels.
