For the sake of resilience and multifunctionality, let's diversify planted forests!

Christian Messier et al.

Summary: As of 2020, the world has around 290 million hectares of planted forests, with 131 million hectares being monoculture forests. Monoculture forests provide timber but lack biodiversity and are more vulnerable to disturbances compared to diverse planted forests. Scientific evidence shows that functionally and species diverse planted forests are more resilient and provide greater ecosystem services. Promoting diverse planted forests requires raising awareness, incentivizing diversity in afforestation programs, developing new wood-based products, investing in research, and expanding the evidence base in under-represented regions.

Mapping of the Acoustic Environment at an Urban Park in the City Area of Milan, Italy, Using Very Low-Cost Sensors

Roberto Benocci et al.

Summary: Passive acoustic monitoring can provide valuable information for biodiversity estimation and conservation planning in urbanized green areas. This study used eco-acoustic indices and clustering analysis to identify areas with different acoustic properties in Parco Nord of Milan. The results were correlated with the results of an aural survey, highlighting the capability of this analysis to discriminate sites with different environmental sounds and create an acoustic environment map.

Acoustic indices as proxies for biodiversity: a meta-analysis

Irene Alcocer et al.

Summary: Acoustic indices are novel tools increasingly used for rapid biodiversity assessment, but show inconsistent performance and varying effect sizes in research. Some indices perform better in extracting biological information, but studies have identified common statistical issues and knowledge gaps that need to be addressed for more informed application of acoustic indices in biodiversity monitoring.

Hybrid bioacoustic and ecoacoustic analyses provide new links between bird assemblages and habitat quality in a winter boreal forest

Taylor Shaw et al.

Summary: This study aimed to establish reliable methods for monitoring bird presence and activity during winter in boreal forests, and found that automated recording is more effective in identifying forest patches of high quality in winter. By comparing acoustic recordings with traditional point counts, the study demonstrated that bioacoustic methods can provide additional metrics of bird activity that point counts cannot. Additionally, ecoacoustic approaches showed potential as biodiversity assessment proxies that respond to differences in habitat quality.
