Time to integrate biotechnological approaches into fish gut microbiome research

Gian Marco Luna et al.

Summary: The fish microbiome is crucial for the health of the fish and its interactions with the environment. Biotechnological applications, such as manipulation of microbial communities, in vitro gut simulators, and synthetic microbial communities, offer new prospects for studying and engineering the fish microbiome. This article summarizes the current knowledge and strategies for manipulating the fish microbiome to improve fish health, food safety, and environmental sustainability.

Quantifying the Colonization of Environmental Microbes in the Fish Gut: A Case Study of Wild Fish Populations in the Yangtze River

Haile Yang et al.

Summary: In aquatic animals, gut microbial communities are influenced by host development and living environments. The colonization and dynamics of these communities are affected by the environment. A study on wild fish populations found that the majority of gut microbes are shared with the water environmental microbial community, and most of them are transient.

Coupled effects of landscape structures and water chemistry on bacterioplankton communities at multi-spatial scales

Wang Shu et al.

Summary: The bacterioplankton communities in rivers are influenced by the surrounding landscape, with both landscape compositions and configurations having significant effects. Land use impacts the bacterioplankton community through both mass effects and species sorting. Water chemistry and its interaction with land use explain a higher proportion of microbial community variations.

Microbial communities reveal impacts of unconventional oil and gas development on headwater streams

Rachel Michaels et al.

Summary: The impact of unconventional oil and gas (UOG) development on freshwater ecosystems is not fully understood. This study used a laboratory experiment and a survey study to investigate the effects of UOG development on microbial biodiversity and function. The results showed that UOG development alters water temperature, chemistry, sediment CO2 production, and microbial community biodiversity in streams. There were consistent changes in the relative abundance of bacterial taxa, suggesting that microorganisms could be used as indicators of environmental changes associated with UOG development. The observed impacts on microbial community composition and carbon cycling could have cascading effects on stream health and broader ecosystem function.

Different effects of nano- and microplastics on oxidative status and gut microbiota in the marine medaka Oryzias melastigma

Hye-Min Kang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that nanoplastics and microplastics have different pathways of impact on marine medaka, with nanoplastics inducing oxidative stress and microplastics causing intestinal damage and dysbiosis of gut microbiota.

The Eco-Evo Mandala: Simplifying Bacterioplankton Complexity into Ecohealth Signatures

Elroy Galbraith et al.

Summary: Analyzing bacterioplankton data from different habitats within the Great Barrier Reef, it was found that microbial communities exhibited varying degrees of deviations from theoretical optimality, mainly due to structural and functional traits related to bacterioplankton abundance and interaction distributions. Dominant populations such as Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Cyanobacteria were identified as having a large functional gene repertoire, contributing to community patterns and increasing resilience in the microbiome. The Eco-Evo Mandala highlighted the importance of habitat and microbiome interaction network topology in evaluating ecosystem health, emphasizing the impact on interactions rather than taxonomic species richness.

Evidence for Long-Term Anthropogenic Pollution: The Hadal Trench as a Depository and Indicator for Dissemination of Antibiotic Resistance Genes

Huiying Yang et al.

Summary: Research on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in Mariana Trench sediments shows a sudden increase in abundance and diversity, with 63.6% of the ARG pollution predicted to have anthropogenic sources. This indicates that human activities have already permeated into the deepest ocean regions, emphasizing the need for better pollution control measures to prevent the accumulation and potential threat of ARG dissemination.

Microbiome Composition and Function in Aquatic Vertebrates: Small Organisms Making Big Impacts on Aquatic Animal Health

Ludek Sehnal et al.

Summary: This critical review synthesizes research on the microbiota of aquatic vertebrates and discusses the impact of emerging stressors on aquatic microbial communities. The structure and function of microbial communities in fish and marine mammals are influenced by environmental factors, with unique compositions found in different species. Understanding the functional relevance of microbial communities is crucial for monitoring water quality and population health in aquatic ecosystems.

Effectiveness assessment of using riverine water eDNA to simultaneously monitor the riverine and riparian biodiversity information

Haile Yang et al.

Summary: The study showed that monitoring effectiveness was higher on summer or autumn rainy days, and monitoring of bacterial biodiversity information was more efficient. On summer rainy days, 43-76% of species information from riparian sites could be detected in adjacent riverine water eDNA samples, and 92-99% of species information from riverine sites could be detected in a 1-km downstream eDNA sample.

Intestinal response characteristic and potential microbial dysbiosis in digestive tract of Bufo gargarizans after exposure to cadmium and lead, alone or combined

Rui Zheng et al.

Summary: The study revealed that co-exposure of Cd-Pb had more severe impacts on both Bufo gargarizans tadpoles and their intestinal microbiota, leading to growth retardation, intestinal histological injury, and decreased activities of digestive enzymes. Additionally, exposure to Cd and Pb, especially in mixed form, altered the diversity and richness of microbiota, with Proteobacteria significantly increased in tadpoles under metal exposure. The functional prediction suggested that the disorders of metabolism and immune responses of intestinal microbiota were increased in tadpoles exposed to Cd/Pb, especially the mixture of Cd and Pb.

Physiological Health and Survival of Captive-Reared and Released Juvenile Blanding's Turtles

Armand A. Cann et al.

Summary: Conservation translocations play a crucial role in maintaining viable wildlife populations of vulnerable species, but the health and survival of head-started juvenile turtles released to the wild remain largely unknown. Research showed that recently released Blanding's turtles did not experience significant physiological changes after release, and surviving juveniles may face threats from predators.

A Metagenomic Insight Into the Hindgut Microbiota and Their Metabolites for Dairy Goats Fed Different Rumen Degradable Starch

Xiaoying Han et al.

Summary: A high-starch diet can increase the risk of hindgut acidosis in high-yielding dairy animals. Research on rumen degradable starch, gut microbiota diversity, and carbohydrate metabolism in dairy goats can help understand the mechanisms. Different dietary RDS levels result in changes in cecum microbial composition and carbohydrate metabolism. High RDS diets may disrupt microbial communities and induce inflammation in the cecum of dairy goats.
