Stocking to offset negative effects of dam construction and balance the ecosystem

Weiwei Yao

Summary: An ecohydraulic model system was developed to evaluate the effects of dam construction and fish restoration strategies. The system included hydrodynamic, hydromorphology, habitat, and population models. The study focused on the Jiao-Mu River and predicted the effects of dam construction and fish stocking on fish habitat and population. The results showed that dam construction would decrease fish habitat quality, but fish stocking could compensate for this. The findings can help assess dam development plans and improve fish restoration success rates.

Small giants: Tributaries rescue spatially structured populations from extirpation in a highly fragmented stream

Jun-ichi Tsuboi et al.

Summary: Habitat fragmentation poses a pervasive threat to biodiversity, particularly for linearly arranged habitats like stream networks. This study finds that small tributaries can rescue or slow down the extinction of specific populations in highly fragmented stream networks. The findings have important implications for the conservation of headwater populations and aquatic biodiversity.

Environmental design of low-head run-of-river hydropower in the United States: A review of facility design models

Colin Sasthav et al.

Summary: The current design models for run-of-river hydropower focus on economic potential and often overlook environmental outcomes. However, as a significant portion of new hydropower potential is found at low-head sites, it is crucial to develop models that address the design challenges at these sites while considering environmental performance standards.

Impact of the construction of a dam and spur dikes on the hydraulic habitat of Megalobrama terminalis spawning sites: A case study in the Beijiang River (China)

Xiyan Yang et al.

Summary: This study assesses the impacts of a dam and spur dikes on fish hydraulic habitat conditions. The results show that the dam alone negatively impacts fish habitat, while the spur dikes have positive effects. The combination of spur dikes and a dam results in better outcomes regarding hydraulic habitat conditions.

Fish Diversity, Endemism, Threats, and Conservation in the Jinsha River Basin (Upper Yangtze River), China

Han Liu et al.

Summary: The Jinsha River basin in China has high freshwater fish biodiversity, but faces threats from overfishing, water pollution, and dam construction. Data collected from the basin revealed patterns in fish species richness. Conservation strategies similar to those used in North America, such as establishing fish reserves and regulating human activities, may help protect native fish species in the Jinsha River basin.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of a Trunk Dam on two fish species in the Kraal River, simulating the habitats and abundance under four different long-term dam operation scenarios. The results suggest a decrease in fish population with long-term river regulation, with varying levels of decline depending on the dam operation scenarios.

Assessment and conservation strategies for endemic fish with drifting eggs threatened by the cascade barrier effect: A case study in the Yalong River, China

Qingyuan Liu et al.

Summary: Studies have shown the importance of protective strategies against barrier effects for preserving populations of fish with drifting eggs, mainly by regulating dam operations to improve spawning and hatching opportunities for fish. Coordinated conservation of mainstream and tributary dams can significantly increase fish resource supplementation, highlighting the crucial role of protecting fish resources.

Summary: This study presents the example of Tokat-Niksar HPP project in Turkey, emphasizing the need for a landscape restoration plan that considers the sensitivity of landscapes in the project area. By conducting a landscape sensitivity analysis and multi-criteria decision analysis, the study determined priority functions and developed a five-stage landscape restoration model to address areas with differing degrees of landscape sensitivity, ultimately providing a framework for sustainable landscape restoration solutions.

Modal Analysis of Turbulent Flow near an Inclined Bank-Longitudinal Structure Junction

Nasser Heydari et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of upstream channel bank angle on turbulent flow characteristics and coherent structures related to local scour development. Results show that as the channel bank angle increases, the intensity of the horseshoe vortex diminishes, reducing the erosional capacity of the flow. The energy distribution among different modes also changes with an increase in bank angle, indicating a decrease in coherence between flow structures and channel slope.

Faik Bilgili et al.

Summary: This study investigates the association between hydroelectric energy consumption and CO2 emissions in the USA using the wavelet transform model. The research findings suggest that hydro energy can intensify CO2 emissions in the short run but diminish them in the long run. The study highlights both adverse and affirmative contributions of hydro energy to greenhouse gas emissions in different time periods.

Linking bait and feeding opportunities to fish foraging habitat for the assessment of environmental flows and river restoration

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: The survival of aquatic biota in different life history stages is influenced by food availability, water quantity, and specific hydrological conditions, especially in degraded rivers affected by hydropower development or climate change. Limited food availability and restricted feeding opportunities in habitats can have a strong impact on habitat carrying capacity, fish growth, and spawning outcomes. Few frameworks are available that closely link bait and feeding opportunities to fish foraging habitat. River restoration has been implemented to address conflicts between ecological demands and power generation benefits, but the suitability of in-stream structures for joint operation of spawning and foraging habitats remains uncertain.

Installation and adaptive management of T-shaped and L-shaped spur dikes to control bed deformation and diversify physical environment in rivers

Takashi Sumi et al.

Summary: The study focuses on installing spur dikes in the Yodo River to control bed deformation and diversify physical conditions. By analyzing numerical data and conducting field surveys, it was found that the installation of spur dikes effectively suppressed sediment deposition and allowed for long-term maintenance of diverse bed material conditions by using large movable sandbags and adjusting the heights of the dikes periodically.

A review and evaluation of the effects of hydrodynamic variables on freshwater mussel communities

Jonathan W. Lopez et al.

Summary: Riverine species are heavily influenced by the hydrodynamic forces generated by flowing water, with freshwater species facing greater threats compared to terrestrial and marine species. Sedentary species like freshwater mussels are particularly vulnerable. Hydrologic variables are useful for predicting changes in mussel communities at basin and landscape scales, while complex hydraulic variables are more effective at finer scales in predicting mussel responses. Simple hydraulic variables have mixed success in predicting mussel community parameters and may be indirectly correlated to mussel responses due to their use in calculating more complex variables.

Using a hierarchical model framework to investigate the relationships between fish spawning and abiotic factors for environmental flow management

Zhi Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that different abiotic factors have significant varying impacts on fish spawning for different species, which are intricately linked to species-specific ecology; water transparency during spawning and accumulated temperature before spawning are important predictors for some fish species, while the effective duration of rising flow discharge before spawning consistently plays an important role for all three fish species; there are explicit interaction effects, mainly between hydrological and thermal variables, on fish spawning intensity.
