Response of C, N, and P stoichiometry characteristics of Broussonetia papyrifera to altitude gradients and soil nutrients in the karst rocky ecosystem, SW China

Qijuan Hu et al.

Summary: The study found that in the karst rocky desertification ecosystem of Southwest China, plant species have different nutrient requirements, with higher altitude Broussonetia papyrifera plants being more restricted by phosphorus. B. papyrifera showed significant responses of C, N, and P stoichiometric characteristics to altitudinal gradients.

Response of soil phytolith occluded organic carbon accumulation to long-term vegetation restoration in Southwest China karst

Ke Wang et al.

Summary: Long-term vegetation restoration can significantly increase the accumulation of phytolith occluded organic carbon (PhytOC) in the soil. Tree forest construction has the best effect on the accumulation of PhytOC in the soil. Vegetation biomass and litters are key factors influencing soil PhytOC accumulation.

Perennial monocropping of khat decreased soil carbon and nitrogen relative to multistrata agroforestry and natural forest in southeastern Ethiopia

Mesele Negash et al.

Summary: The monocropping of cash crops is replacing native forests in the tropics, but there is no direct evidence on the impact on soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen (N) compared to multistrata-agroforestry-based cash cropping. This study found that multistrata-agroforestry-based cash cropping maintains most of the SOC and N stocks of converted native forests lost in conversion to cash monocropping, indicating the importance of economic incentives to prevent the loss of current stocks.

Vegetation restoration facilitates belowground microbial network complexity and recalcitrant soil organic carbon storage in southwest China karst region

Linan Hu et al.

Summary: Soil organic carbon (SOC) is an important component of soil ecosystems, and understanding its interaction with soil microbial community is crucial for predicting carbon fate in soils following vegetation restoration. In this study, high-throughput sequencing and spectroscopy analysis were used to characterize SOC compounds and elucidate associated microbial community. The results showed that SOC, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, microbial biomass, dissolved organic carbon, available potassium, calcium, and soil moisture increased significantly with vegetation restoration. The abundance of certain carbon compounds and the dominant phyla of microorganisms were strongly related to SOC. The composition and assembly mechanisms of bacterial and fungal communities varied along the vegetation restoration chronosequence. Certain keystone genera and functional groups were identified in the microbial community, which were associated with enhanced recalcitrant SOC storage. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into microbe response and the impact of microbes on SOC storage in vegetation restoration processes.

Responses of soil organic carbon components and their sensitivity to karst rocky desertification control measures in Southwest China

Jiacheng Lan

Summary: This study showed that karst rocky desertification control measures can significantly increase soil organic carbon (SOC) and its components, with particulate organic carbon (POC) being the most sensitive fraction. The C/N ratio and CPMI are useful indicators for overall carbon changes in different control measures in degraded karst environments.

Long-term vegetation restoration increases carbon sequestration of different soil particles in a semi-arid desert

Lihua Bai et al.

Summary: The study showed that after vegetation restoration, soil particles of <0.05 mm and aggregates in arbor lands and shrub lands increased significantly compared to shifting sandy land. Different vegetation forms had varying effects on soil carbon sequestration, with arbor land being most effective in SIC fixation. Soil particles of <0.05 mm contained the highest SOC and SIC contents, indicating their important role in carbon storage.

Effect of land cover change on total SOC and soil PhytOC accumulation in the karst subtropical forest ecosystem, SW China

Shuang Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that land cover change significantly influences the total SOC and soil PhytOC content and storage in the karst subtropical forest. The soil environment and carbon storage in bamboo forests are significantly higher compared to other land cover types. Total SOC and soil PhytOC contents are highest in the soil surface layer and decrease with soil depth.

Latitudinal and depth patterns of soil microbial biomass carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in grasslands of an agro-pastoral ecotone

Xinyue Chen et al.

Summary: This study conducted in the agro-pastoral ecotone of northern China found that microbial biomass carbon and phosphorus were significantly positively correlated with latitude, while nitrogen showed no significant latitudinal pattern, independent of soil depth. The major influential factors for this pattern were soil total carbon content, soil total nitrogen content, and soil moisture. Furthermore, microbial biomass decreased with increasing soil depth.
