Ontogenetic development of pallid sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus) and shovelnose sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus platorynchus) from hatch through yolk absorption

Kimberly A. Chojnacki et al.

Summary: This study described the development of free embryos in pallid sturgeon and shovelnose sturgeon and found that the development rate was similar between the two species. Lengths of free embryos overlapped among different developmental stages, indicating that length alone is not sufficient to estimate age. The description of free embryo development provides a template for the development of more sophisticated models to estimate the age of field-collected specimens and inform management actions to increase the survival of early life-stage sturgeons.

A three-dimensional Lagrangian particle tracking model for predicting transport of eggs of rheophilic-spawning carps in turbulent rivers

Geng Li et al.

Summary: Grass carp, bighead carp, and silver carp reproduce by spawning in flowing water. Their eggs and larvae develop while drifting. The hydrodynamic conditions and water temperature play a crucial role in determining the spawning locations, egg survival, and downstream movement of the hatched larvae. However, the existing egg drift models have limitations in accurately capturing the effects of localized turbulence on egg transport. In this study, a three-dimensional Lagrangian particle tracking model was developed to overcome these limitations by using fully resolved river hydrodynamics and a continuous random walk algorithm driven by local turbulent kinetic energy and its dissipation rate.
