Global models and predictions of plant diversity based on advanced machine learning techniques

Summary: This study used machine learning and conventional statistical methods to investigate and predict global plant diversity, revealing complex interactions between environmental factors and plant diversity. Current climate and environmental heterogeneity were found to be the primary drivers, while past environmental conditions had smaller but detectable impacts on plant diversity. Summary: Global tree abundance is influenced by latitudinal variables, tree size, and self-thinning strategies. Previous studies have overlooked the role of local competition in regulating climate and soil effects on tree density. By analyzing forest inventories from 23 well-conserved areas worldwide, we found that the productivity patterns of tree density are evident as large trees become dominant. To ensure accurate estimates and understand the implications, global assessments of tree abundance should consider the interaction between latitudinal sources of variability and local biotic influences.

Automated assessment reveals that the extinction risk of reptiles is widely underestimated across space and phylogeny

This study presents a machine learning-based method for automated extinction risk assessment, provides provisional assessments for reptiles, and examines the impact of human decision biases. The results show that unassessed and Data Deficient reptiles are more likely to be threatened and that the assessor's identity strongly affects the predictions. It is recommended to focus on regions and taxa identified as more threatened in new assessments and conservation planning.
