Weighted individual-resource networks in prey-predator systems: the role of prey availability on the emergence of modular structures

Summary: An analysis on individual-resource networks of 3 species of Mediterranean salamanders revealed significant nestedness, indicating the presence of both selective and opportunistic individuals in the population. Prey diversity, rather than abundance, was correlated with inter-individual resource variation and led to the emergence of significant modularity in all networks. These findings align with the distinct preferences model of Optimal Diet Theory (ODT) and suggest that individuals can adapt their diet assembly rules according to changes in prey diversity.
